Maybe these universities should look the other way, at other knowledge, and another economy and democracy. </li></ul><ul><li>Showing the picture they might get in the Netherlands is the goal of this presentation during the workshop ‘Researching Publics’. </li></ul>

Pendrecht University www.vitaalpendrecht.nl/pu <ul><li>Purpose of Pendrecht University is: </li></ul><ul><li>To tell the story of inhabitants of the Pendrecht neighborhood to professionals and administrators. The former are the professors and the latter the students; </li></ul><ul><li>To transfer methods to professionals that focus on the ‘power of the citizens’; </li></ul><ul><li>To stimulate exchanges between inhabitants of Pendrecht from various cultures and age; </li></ul><ul><li>To develop talent, participation and entrepreneurship of inhabitants of Pendrecht. </li></ul>

Timorplein Community <ul><li>The Timorplein Community (TPC) is a network of (social) entrepreneurs and societal organizations in the neighborhood ‘Indische Buurt’ in Amsterdam. </li></ul><ul><li>Established entrepreneurs from within the neighborhood mobilize their knowledge and experience for people from the neighborhood who can also become (social) entrepreneurs. </li></ul><ul><li>The TPC is a place for exchange of knowledge: by way of combination of the ideas to improve the neighborhood with the knowledge and expertise of others it should be possible to realize initiatives in a better and faster way. </li></ul>

Civic Academie www.civiczeeburg.nl <ul><li>Civic Academie is the centre for training and coaching of all volunteers and inhabitants of the neighborhood of Zeeburg (Amsterdam). </li></ul><ul><li>The Civic Academy organizes courses and training. </li></ul><ul><li>The Civic Academy offers a platform for networking, and possibilities to develop the talents of inhabitants of the neighborhood. </li></ul>

EVA-Lanxmeer www.eva-lanxmeer.nl <ul><li>EVA-Lanxmeer is probably the most advanced sustainable neighborhood in the Netherlands. </li></ul><ul><li>An outreach to other neighborhoods is the EVA Course. </li></ul><ul><li>Focus of this course is producing knowledge of the built environment, buildings, exploitation, living, and maintenance, beneficial for people and planet. </li></ul>

Stichting Burger Academie | Citizen Foundation Academy www.stichtingburger.nl <ul><li>De Stichting Burger Academie is part of the Stichting Burger, the Citizen Foundation. </li></ul><ul><li>Purpose of this Foundation is to enhance social cohesion by way of informing, and creating the interest of citizens of all nationalities and cultures, religion, and background , and stimulating their participation in exchanging various opinions about social and cultural issues. </li></ul><ul><li>De Stichting Burger Academie offers meetings, workshops and master classes. </li></ul>

De Dialoog Academie www.dialoogacademie.nl <ul><li>The Dialoog Academie, Dialogue Academy, is a national platform for integration, diversity and dialogue in the Netherlands. </li></ul><ul><li>Means of the academy are educational, cultural and scientific activities regarding a number of social issues: unity, diversity, synergy, innovation, interaction and intercultural and social dialogue. </li></ul>

Academie voor Zelfstandigheid www.academievoorzelfstandigheid.nl <ul><li>The Academie voor Zelfstandigheid, Academy for Autonomy, educates people with a handicap to live more autonomously, and take better control over their lives. </li></ul><ul><li>The academy works from the possibilities of the student. </li></ul><ul><li>The knowledge that’s being produced will be disseminated throughout society. </li></ul><ul><li>The Academy just opened its doors this summer, and builds on a nationwide network. </li></ul>

Campus Orléon www.orleon.nl <ul><li>[campus]OrléoN is a full service network for academic research, also outside of the university. </li></ul><ul><li>Purpose is to coach (groups of) researchers from idea until realization. </li></ul><ul><li>This is a way to upscale the coaching of research, and thus contribute to developing the Netherlands as a knowledge society. </li></ul>

Melkvee Academie www.melkveeacademie.nl <ul><li>The Melkvee Academie, Dairy Cattle Academy, supports farmers being entrepreneurs, trying to innovate, and looking for knowledge to stay informed. </li></ul><ul><li>The academy is of the farmers and for them: farmers learning from farmers. </li></ul><ul><li>The academy is a national knowledge network. It’s independent, and makes experience and knowledge available for farmers, experts and research. </li></ul>

Corporate Academies <ul><li>In a growing number both companies, and governmental organisations, are opening new academies. </li></ul><ul><li>Examples from the private sector are the Grontmij Academy, and Osborne Academy. </li></ul><ul><li>Examples from the public sector are the academy of the national department for social welfare, the academy for governmental communication, and the Dutch Defence Academy. </li></ul><ul><li>There are at least twenty more examples, but they’re left out of this presentation. </li></ul>
  18. 18. 2 What’s in the picture? <ul><li>What (if any) is the story behind all these examples? A step towards analysis: </li></ul><ul><li>Gibbons et al. (1994) already pointed out the social distribution of knowledge (mode 2 knowledge production). </li></ul><ul><li>In these examples we see this happen in practice: researching publics produce knowledge, and they build an infrastructure to distribute this knowledge. Almost every example is from 2005 or later. </li></ul>
  19. 19. 3 Discussion, three theses <ul><li>1: Researching Publics are starting to build a new knowledge infrastructure. </li></ul><ul><li>2: The existing infrastructure, a.o. universities, is for the most part not connected. </li></ul><ul><li>3: Far more than the old knowledge infrastructure the new one is an example of the knowledge democracy. </li></ul>
