He/she will be required to rotate the ball around his/her waist, clockwise at pace and on the move for 20 seconds, anti-clockwise for a further 20 seconds, completing the minute by doing Figure 8 exercises through their legs. The coaches/helpers are to be used as feeders to quickly give the tested player another ball if they lose control. Every knock-on in each section is then added up as a total. Player must complete this skill once in total.

On the first run the tested player sprints out to Cone A and takes a pass from a coach/helper on the right. He/she then immediately passes to another coach/helper on the left and sprints to the end at Cone B. On the second run the pass is taken from the left and passed to the right. The player is timed from the moment he/she leaves Start until they reach Cone B. Each mistake (ie knock on/bad pass) incurs a 0.2 second time penalty. An average time is taken from the 2 runs

He/she has to run and catch 3 high balls inside the in-goal area thrown by the coach/helper over the players head as they are running and then score a try. Stationary Ball 1st run - Begin at Start, sprint to Cone A. At Cone A, pick up a ball 0.5m before the line and in the same movement touch down just over the line. 2nd run – Same as 1st except the tested player must kick the stationary ball forward from the 0.5m mark (Cone A) into the in-goal and touchdown. Player must complete 5 tries (3 high balls, 2 stationary balls) in total.

Junior Rhinos Skills Awards Gold Defence (X5) # of Points = 10 Equipment: 4 cones (to mark square) 1 Ball 4 players as attackers Awarded for: 2 points for each play at coach’s discretion (Total of 10) 8m 10m Start Tested player must: Stand in the middle of the back line as if a defender. The 4 attackers will then execute 5 attacking movements from a play the ball situation. The tested player has to stop the ball carrier reaching the line by a 2 handed touch. The attacking players may utilise any attacking options they wish including running from Acting Half, dummy runs etc but no kicking. If the ball carrier is tackled via a 2 handed touch then the play ends. If the ball is knocked on/passed forward etc then the play ends. Player must complete this skill once in total.

He/she has to run and catch or dive on 3 balls grubber kicked into the in-goal area by the coach/helper and then score a try. High Ball (x2) Begin at Start and run forward toward the in-goal. As he/she is running the coach/helper will kick a high ball into the in-goal for the player to catch and score a try Player must complete 5 tries (3 grubbers, 2 High Balls) in total.

  39. 39. Advanced Skills & Introduction to Coaching Award Coaching # of Points = N/A Warm up The player must create a 10 minute warm up designed for any age between 5 years old and 13 years old. It should incorporate aspects of light running and stretches for arms, legs and ankles. The player will then take their warm up at the next available date. 1 session The player will be given a small 5 minute session plan to learn, on whatever aspect the coach decides. The player will then take that session at the next available date.

Advanced Skills & Introduction to Coaching Award Defence # of Points = 14 Equipment: 6 cones 1 tackle Bag 1 Coach/helper 1 ball Awarded for: 1 point per tackle (Total of 5) 1 point per retreat (Total of 5) 1 point per sprint & dive (Total of 1) 3 points at coach’s discretion (Total of 3) 10m 5m L2 L1 Start E R1 R2 30m Tested player must: Complete a set of 6 by beginning at Start Run forward and tackle the tackling bag, using correct technique. Regain feet and then retreat to L1 On instruction from the coach, run forward and tackle the bag again, then retreat to L2. Run forward and tackle the bag for a third time, retreating to R1 Tackle the bag again and retreat to R2 Tackle the bag for a 5th and final time and retreat to a markers position directly in front of the bag On instruction from the coach he/she must then sprint 30m and dive on a loose ball to complete the set. Player must complete this skill once in total.

Advanced Skills & Introduction to Coaching Award Punt Kick Accuracy (X5) # of Points = max of 50 Equipment: 8 cones (to mark squares) 1 Ball Awarded for: 5 points for first bounce within the 10x10m square 10 points for first bounce within the 2x2m square 10m 10m 2x2m 20m Start Tested player must: From 20m away at Start, kick the ball so the first bounce lands either within the 10x10m square or the smaller 2x2m square. The kick must be high. A first bounce within the 10x10m square earns 5 points A first bounce within the 2x2m square earns 10 points The player must score at least 30 points to pass. Player must complete this skill 5 times in total.

Advanced Skills & Introduction to Coaching Award Refereeing # of Points = N/A Stage 1 The player will be given 3 sections of the Laws of the Game to study The following week the player will be shown several situations at training relating to those sections. For instance if the player were given a section on play-the-ball to study then the following week he/she would be shown several instances of the play-the-ball to show them which is right and which should be penalised and in what way. Stage 2 Following the completion of Stage 1 to the satisfaction of the coach, the player will be given 3 more sections of the Laws of the Game to study. Then the following week will be shown in training examples of all 6 areas he/she has studied. He/she will then referee a small 5 minute game Stage 3 Following the completion of Stage 2 to the satisfaction of the coach, the player will be asked to study the entire Laws of the Game. The following week (if appropriate) he/she will be asked 10 multiple choice questions on the Laws of the Game. If the coach is satisfied, the player will then referee the end-of-training-session game.

Advanced Skills & Introduction to Coaching Award Coaching – Session Plan Name Date - Session – Length of session - Remember to setup your session well in advance so that you are completely in control when you are put in charge and don’t have to make players wait while you setup the drill. Try to explain the drill clearly and demonstrate if necessary. Don’t be afraid to ask for/pick volunteers to demonstrate aspects of the drill to the group. If necessary, correct players on their technique either with a quick word in their ear or if many players are showing the same failure of technique then briefly stop the drill, explain and correct the technique and then restart the drill. He/she must then kick the ball 30m downfield into a 40m wide area that is covered by a coach/helper acting as a fullback. The aim is to beat the fullback by getting the ball to bounce rather than be caught on the full by the fullback. On 1 kick, an additional coach/helper may act as a defender and put pressure upon the kicker. Player must complete this skill 5 times in total.

Advanced Skills & Introduction to Coaching Award Try Line Kick Defence (X5) Equipment: Cones (to mark lines) 1 Ball 1 Coach/helper # of Points = 10 Awarded for: 1 point for correct technique (Total of 5) 1 point per catch (Total of 5) Dead Ball Line Start Try Line Tested player must: Stand in the in-goal area acting as a full back. The coach/helper will then put 3 grubber kicks into the in-goal. The tested player must catch/pick up the ball and return the ball out over the tryline. On 1 occasion a coach/helper will put the tested player under pressure. The coach/helper will also put up 2 high kicks for the player to catch in-goal and return over the try line. On 1 occasion a coach/helper will put the tested player under pressure.

Running, stretching etc. Include stretches for the lower legs, upper legs, arms and ankles. Give rough estimates of how long each activity will take ie arm stretches – 30 seconds, jogging for 2 minutes, sprinting for 30 seconds etc If you need any equipment such as balls or cones, list what equipment your warm up session would require.
