Refereeing
# of Points = N/A
Stage 1
The player will be given 3 sections of the Laws of the Game to study
The following week the player will be shown several situations at training relating to those sections.
For instance if the player were given a section on play-the-ball to study then the following week
he/she would be shown several instances of the play-the-ball to show them which is right and which
should be penalised and in what way.
Stage 2
Following the completion of Stage 1 to the satisfaction of the coach, the player will be given 3 more
sections of the Laws of the Game to study. Then the following week will be shown in training
examples of all 6 areas he/she has studied.
He/she will then referee a small 5 minute game
Stage 3
Following the completion of Stage 2 to the satisfaction of the coach, the player will be asked to study
the entire Laws of the Game. The following week (if appropriate) he/she will be asked 10 multiple
choice questions on the Laws of the Game.
If the coach is satisfied, the player will then referee the end-of-training-session game.

Coaching – Session Plan
Name Date -
Session –
Length of session -
Remember to setup your session well in advance so that you are completely in control when you
are put in charge and don’t have to make players wait while you setup the drill. Try to explain the
drill clearly and demonstrate if necessary. Don’t be afraid to ask for/pick volunteers to demonstrate
aspects of the drill to the group. If necessary, correct players on their technique either with a quick
word in their ear or if many players are showing the same failure of technique then briefly stop the
drill, explain and correct the technique and then restart the drill.
Correct wrong technique
Praise good technique

Remember to include all aspects of a warm up. Running, stretching etc. Include stretches for the
lower legs, upper legs, arms and ankles.
Give rough estimates of how long each activity will take ie arm stretches – 30 seconds, jogging for 2
