  2. 2. Partial Dentures • Partial dentures are removable dental appliances designed to replace missing teeth and are commonly retained and supported by the remaining natural teeth. • Retention often involves wire retention around the natural teeth and these wires are often visible.
  3. 3. Varieties of Partial Dentures • Partial dentures using wire retention are the most common variety. • There are a number of other varieties that are available for patients who do not wish to see the wire retention.
  4. 4. Case #1 Standard Partial Denture retained with Wires 4 Energy Square Prosthodontics www.energysquaredental.ca  In many circumstances, these partial dentures provide acceptable treatment to replace missing teeth with a minimal financial commitment.  However, many patients are unhappy with the display of the wires.
  5. 5. Case #2 Partial Denture On Casts 5 Energy Square Prosthodontics www.energysquaredental.ca  This case illustrates a combination of an upper and lower partial denture.  This case is limited. All of the posterior and anterior teeth on one side of the mouth are missing. This requires the placement of wire retention on the anterior teeth on the other side of the mouth.
  6. 6. Case #3 6 Energy Square Prosthodontics www.energysquaredental.ca  This case involves an upper denture combined with a lower partial denture.  The wires used to retain the partial denture are designed to minimize the display of metal. The patient’s lower lip will cover the wires. Wire Retention
  7. 7. Case #4 7 Energy Square Prosthodontics www.energysquaredental.ca  This case combines crowns with a partial denture.  This combination provides the opportunity to hide the retention mechanism.  No wires are visible when finished.
  8. 8. Case #5 8 Energy Square Prosthodontics www.energysquaredental.ca  This is another variety of a partial denture combining crowns and a partial denture with a hidden retention mechanism.
  9. 9. Case #6 9 Energy Square Prosthodontics www.energysquaredental.ca  This is another variety of a partial denture combining crowns and a partial denture with a hidden retention mechanism.  Frame #1 Crowns on a cast.  Frame #2 Crowns combined with partial denture.
