  7. 7. Who are we…? • Our vision is simple – To grow a world- class digital & creative economy in England’s Northwest.

Where we’ve come from • Started off as a Regional Screen Agency • Publicly funded – UKFC / NWDA / Local Authorities / Skillset / European Funding • Merged with Media Training NW in May 2007 • Were responsible for Film, TV, Games, Digital and Radio • Took on wider remit for all creative and digital industries in October 2008 • Re-launch 2nd April 2009

Some of the results • In 2007 – 08 contributed £6.48 million in GVA through investment in 50 companies • Invested in over 87 SMEs in Greater Manchester alone safeguarding £10.4 million of sales • Had over 846 filming enquiries through our Film Offices 08-09 • Generated est £48 million inward investment through Film Offices • Assisted 13 dramas in Manchester during 08-09 • Launched first ever TV Advanced Apprenticeship in Media Production • Give out over £300k of funding to film festivals / archive and events

MediaCityUK studios • One of the largest high definition studio facilities in Europe, owned and managed by Peel Media Services • Located at the heart of the MediaCityUK piazza • Seven HD television studios – largest 12,000 sq ft; smallest 900 sq ft • Two audio studios (one dedicated to the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra) • Technical block with: fully-equipped Sound & Vision control; core post facilities; Central Technical Area/Master Control; dressing rooms; make-up; workshops; set storage; Green Rooms

Talent Pool • Manchester an acknowledged leader in creative and digital industries: home to the 2nd largest creative cluster in Europe • Employment in digital and creative industries in the NW estimated at 320,000 in 31,000 businesses (source: NWDA) • 18 universities within 60 minutes drive of Manchester:  300 media courses on offer  Nearly 15,000 students studying computer science subjects • Salford University offers courses in Radio & TV, animation, media technology, computer and video games

What space in MCUK gives the University • Physical presence in MediaCityUK - 103,000 sq feet over four floors in an “ambassadorial” building next door to the BBC • Extension of main campus: Broadcast Zone, Digital Media Zone, Virtual Lab, Digital Performance Space, Creative Spaces for:  academic teaching  project-based learning  user-centred design and innovation • Major focus for employer-led and postgraduate learning and research collaboration, and undergraduate provision • A space without departmental branding: it will represent the university as a whole; cross-Faculty co-operation; a new way of delivering learning (teaching & research)

The Timeline • Sept 2011: University’s MediaCityUK facility opens for business • Nov 2010 - Feb 2011: University takes vacant possession of MCUK building • Jan 2010: Start marketing courses to be offered from MCUK • Now-Dec 2009: Curriculum planning • Now-Feb 2011: Construction of base-build underway • Now: Secure sponsorship agreements

Our engagement with the Media sector • Applied research: what the University can do for its partners • Extensive skills:  Content Provision (Salford is the only UK university with an output deal with a nationally distributed TV channel, Channel M)  Technical Know-How (e.g.: world-class Acoustics department; the BBC won’t be putting an Acoustics research facility into its MCUK buildings because Salford University has one) • (New) Media courses, enterprise training, internships • Involvement of all Faculties and Schools • HE Partnership Agreement with BBC
