  • 1.
  • 2. What is Wireless Internet?
    • Wireless Internet is the ability for devices to connect wirelessly through a series of interconnecting access points known at hotspots.
    • Wireless internet uses radio waves that include data sent by the wireless network adapter that the antenna receives.
  • 3. Wifi Speeds
    • Wifi speeds differ depending on the standard they support.
    • Wifi Standard was created in 1997 by IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).
    • Different Standards include:
    • 802.11 a and g has a maximum speed of 54 Mbps.
    • 802.11 b has a maximum speed of 11 Mbps.
    • 802.11 n replaces all other standards and has a speed of 100 Mbps.
  • 4. Wireless Internet security
    • To prevent hacking to your wireless network, a password can be applied by going to the settings of the router.
    • Most wifi passwords are encrypted by either WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) or WPA (Wifi Protected Access).
    • Hiding the SSID (Service Set IDentifier) can prevent the chances of the network to be hacked because it won’t allow the network to show up on the list.
  • 5. Wifi Advantages
    • Main advantage is space shifting; the user no longer has to keep the computer attached to the wall.
    • The user is no longer restricted to one device.
    • The user is never away from the internet when they need it most.
  • 6. Wifi disadvantages
    • The device is at higher risk to be hacked into.
    • The internet can run slower due to having multiple users.
    • The device is more likely to lose internet service.
    • Random people can have access to your network and use your bandwith if no password has been set.
  • 7. Wifi Devices
    • Router
    • Acess Point
    • USB Wireless Adapter
    • Laptops/desktops
    • Cell phones/ Smart phones
    • iPods
    • PDA (Personal Digital Assistant)
  • 8. Impact of wifi
    • The internet is more popular because it’s more convenient to use.
    • The internet is spread out in every part of the world.
    • Cable is fading away due to people watching TV online.
    • Families and friends can have audio/video conversations with loved ones across the world.
    • The internet is a major source or research, knowledge, and entertainment.
  • 9. Wifi and Media Literacy
    • Factual Foundation: wireless internet allows you to access the internet with out the use of wires.
    • Media Dynamics: there is no need for anyone to say if wireless internet becomes the next big thing.
    • Media Effects: the use of internet has rises.
    • Media Issues: we have built a dependency on the internet because of Wifi
