  • 1. 11 Mbps Wireless PCI Card SMC2602W Total Wireless LAN Solution The wireless LAN solution is the easiest alternative to a traditional wired network. The SMC 2602W connects your desktop PC instantly with an existing Ethernet installation to support mobile users, temporary work sites, and other applications ranging from the classroom to the boardroom. Wireless technology provides the maximum user mobility, simple and flex- ible installation options, a reduced cost of ownership (no cabling costs or maintenance) and excellent scalability in supporting additional PCs.True 11 Mbps wireless is ideal for use with cable modems, DSL or SOHO applications. In the typical wireless configuration an Access Point (transceiver) connects to a wired net- work location via standard cabling. The Access Point supports up to 128 users located a couple of hundred feet apart, with a maximum of 1,500 feet. Users access the LAN via the SMC wireless adapters in their notebooks. The wireless LAN adapters interface between the client Network Operating System and airwaves via an antenna (Access Point.) To grow the wireless LAN, just add Access Points. In a peer-to-peer configuration, one wireless SMC card is needed for each notebook, and no Access Point is required. In evaluating a wireless LAN, it is essential to consider range and coverage, throughput, compatibility with existing LANs, cost, and scalability for future growth. Throughput is a key issue, and should be put into perspective: the typical wireless LAN runs at an average of 1.6 Mbps, thus the current standard of 2 Mbps is more than adequate for most common LAN Features applications. Increased user needs and more demanding new applications, have created the demand for 11 Mbps wireless solutions. Benefits Some compelling reasons for adopting the SMC total wireless LAN solution: • Users get instant access to shared information without the need to plug in High Performance • Network managers can set up or expand a new LAN without the need for installation or • 11 Mbps wireless LAN moving wires • Up to 1,500 ft. operating range • 11 Mbps performance will meet all your foreseeable networking needs • 2.4 GHz frequency band • Wireless LANs are tremendously convenient, enhance productivity, and provide a real cost • Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) benefit over traditional wired networks EZ to use The SMC wireless solutions are supported by a limited lifetime warranty and 24/7 technical • Plug-and-play, no configuration support. • “At-a-glance” network monitoring LEDs Compatible • IEEE 802.11b • Windows 95/98/NT/ 2000 Reliable • SMC Customer Satisfaction Guarantee • Limited lifetime warranty • 24/7 technical support Web Site • www.smc.com
