In the quest to make communications easier and more efficient, more and more companies are turning
to solutions such as webcasting, webinars, and web conferencing. Each of these communication
methods can be useful to any business, although they each have their own advantages and
disadvantages.
Webcasting refers to the act of broadcasting content over the Internet. This is typically done with
streaming media technologies that allow users to send out audio and video to online audiences,
although these broadcasts may consist only of audio and PowerPoint slides. Compared to the other two
methods, webcasting generally features more video content as opposed to allowing the sharing of
desktop applications and content. This makes webcasting ideally suited for public events.
Webinars are generally one-way in nature, and most involve one or more speakers sending a message
out to a relatively small audience. Most webinars also allow for very little audience interaction, although
they can be a collaborative process as well. Webinars also usually allow for extensive screen, desktop
and/or application sharing. While webinars do allow participants to manipulate the presenters’ screen in
theory, this feature isn't typically used.
Web conferencing refers to collaborative interaction over the Internet. This communications method
allows presenters to show their audiences the contents of his or her computer screen, and it allows
collaboration between the presenter and the audience as well. Web conferencing generally focuses on
computer-based data such as presentations, documents, and software applications and they are usually
displayed on the participants’ screen, allowing for easy manipulation. This makes web conferencing
ideally suited for brainstorming, collaborative planning sessions, demos, and product presentations. In
