Personal Review: Archos 5 120 GB Internet Media Tablet
I've had this little gem (Archos 5) for a few days now. I upgraded the
firmware using wifi right out of the box. I also bought the battery dock and
leather case which I like both. The 600mhz CPU flies around the GUI,
which tends to be very responsive. One might argue that it can lag from
time to time, but I bet that is the latency of the disk drive. Meanwhile the
itouch when under heavy use, might respond, but the screen is often
blank. Point here is that this thing is just as responsive, if not better under
heavy load and the HD is probably the bottleneck, but in return for 250GB
of storage instead of 32gb I'll deal with this very minor lag. Plus the screen
is fantastic and is around twice the size - just not multitouch, but so what.
I ultimately love the fact this this is running an linux OS of which you can
SSH into out of the box over wifi. I plead the hackers of the world to
embrace this gadget and write some nice extensions to the UI, and better
FREE codec support.
The only aggravating thing so far is that im annoyed Archos would try to
charge for something EXPECTED such as H.264 playback (i.e. MP4 aka
iphone) codecs. I am able to encode TV and Movies using XVID just using
Advanced Simple Profile (ASP) Level 5 which maxes at 720 x 576 x 30fps.
So I dont upscale to the full 800x480 of the native resolution. XVID is a
pretty easy codec and compatibility is free. WMV is annoying as well - I'm
almost offended they would charge for this. MPG2/AC3/DVD - offended
here are well.
BTW, I believe this is a very similar CPU to that of the one running in the
latest iphone 3GS so its going to be snappier than anything older than that
model. I like having direct control of the file system to place my videos and
music in the hierarchy and naming I want, and this easily enables that with
teh USB cable. It also provides for non pc storage on the road for my
digital stills and camcorder.
Bottom line, this is a better media device than the itouch - It just needs
more application support.
