This document discusses an organization called WIKISPEED that uses agile methodologies like Scrum, Lean, Kanban, XP and XM to build ultra-efficient and modular cars. They aim to go from idea to delivering a product to a customer in under 7 days using Scrum design and manufacturing teams along with an object-oriented architecture. The document provides examples of how they can iterate on a physical product design in a single sprint by starting with CAD, CNC machining prototypes in foam within a day, laying up composites the next day, and testing the iteration.

To this. So how did a guy in a garage with only pocket change worth of funding design a car that Is aesthetically appealingFun to driveand gets 100 miles per gallon.

Because of the car’s modular construction, a rolling chassis was able to be built backstage in 3 hours by volunteers who had never seen the car before, with no training.
Iteration + Mass Manufacturing: How could this work? Reduce the cost to make change across the line. CI: Cadence of new design deployed to line. Replace bottlenecks that are expensive to change. Position R&D at the head of the line. Scale out instead of Scale up (Microfactories).Delivering Faster and More CheaplyEnhancements to ScrumModularityHow do you Make an increment of a physical product in a single iteration? It is important that these sessions are high energy and optimistic! Morale is a multiplier for velocity! A company, just like a person, has to feel good about itself in order to confidently attempt change.
We set up a Scrum room and co-located the hardware engineers and their equipment with the embedded software teams and marketing SME’s.
We saw stand-ups for line manufacturing, and they are excited now to apply retrospectives and the Scrum Master role as a servant leader for the team.
They showed us light-weight solutions they were already using, like rapid prototyping of production test fixtures.
We needed a more aesthetic car body, but that would cost $36k and 3 months time.
We were invited to the largest auto show in the world, in terms of attendance, January 2011 in Detroit.
