  6. 6. A. Strong Government <ul><li>509 B.C. Romans rebel against their rulers and form a republic </li></ul><ul><li>Republic – form of government where leaders are voted into office by citizens </li></ul><ul><li>Citizens have the power </li></ul>

Strong Army <ul><li>Male citizens who owned land had to serve in the army </li></ul><ul><li>Harsh punishments and tough discipline </li></ul><ul><li>Organized into Legions of 6,000 men </li></ul><ul><li>Legionary – A Roman soldier </li></ul><ul><li>Carried a gladius – short sword, and a pilum – a spear </li></ul>

Shrewd Rulers <ul><li>Built military settlements in conquered areas </li></ul><ul><li>Built roads between towns </li></ul><ul><li>Granted citizenship to conquered peoples </li></ul><ul><li>Knew that people would be more loyal to those who treated them well </li></ul><ul><li>If people revolted, it was swiftly put down </li></ul>
