      • Answer the following question with the munchkins at your table.
      • Question: Who was the first Emperor of Rome? Which Triumvirate was he a member of?
    • Objectives
      • Identify the improvements that Augustus made in Rome
      • Watch Mr. Landis’ sweet movie
    • Station Activity Part 1…
      • Have one person in your group read the worksheet out loud
      • Each group member fill in the corresponding box on the graphic organizer
      • One group member writes the answers on the poster board

      • Augustus improved the Roman military, government, tax/legal system, and the city.
    • A. Military Improvements
      • A. Professional army – 150,000 citizens
      • B. Praetorian Guard – 9,000 body guards for the emperor
      • C. Conquered new lands in every direction
      • D. Pax Romana – long era “Roman Peace” that lasted until 180 A.D.

      • Appointed Proconsuls – governors for each table chosen by Augustus – big deal?
      • Augustus traveled to visit them
      • Slowly taking power away from the Senate…

    • C. Home Improvement
      • Built palaces, fountains, public buildings
      • Arts flourish like never before
      • Imported grain to feed the poor – why is this a big deal?
      • Well fed population is a happy one
    • D. Tax/Legal Improvements
      • Reformed the tax system
      • Tax collectors were crooks – why?
      • Made them permanent government workers
      • Created set of laws for non-citizens
