Identifies the environmental aspects of our activities, products, andservices within the defined scope of the environmental managementsystem that we can control and over which we can be expected to haveinfluence, taking into account planned or new developments or new ormodified activities, products and services andb. To determine those aspects which have (or can have) significant impact(s)on the environment.ABC documents this information on EMSF001 and keeps it up to date. SignificantAspects are summarized onABC ensures that the significant environmental aspects are taken into account inestablishing, implementing and maintaining our environmental management system.4.2.2 Legal and other requirementsABC has established, implemented and maintained a procedure (EMSP002):a. to identify and have access to the applicable legal requirements and otherrequirements to which the organization subscribes related to itsenvironmental aspects andb. To determine how these requirements apply to our environmental aspects.ABC ensures that these applicable legal requirements and other requirements to which wesubscribe are taken into account in establishing, implementing and maintaining itsEnvironmental Management System.• At ABC we access the federal, state, and local legal requirements through theinternet.• Local – the EHS Management representative remains informed of localregulations through attending local council meetings or reviewing council meetingminutes in the towns/counties where the plants are located.4.2.3 Continuous Improvement Process - Objectives, targets and programsABC is committed to the continuous improvement of its’ environmental performance andEMS system. Improvements in environmental performance will be accomplishedthrough the establishment and documentation of environmental objectives and targets,monitoring significant environmental aspects, and regular EMS communications.

ABC also considers our technological options, financial,operational and business requirements and the views of interested parties.ABC also has established, implemented and maintained a program for achieving ourobjectives and targets. This program includes:a. Designation of responsibility for achieving objectives and targets at relevantfunctions and level of our organization andb. The means and time frames by which they are to be achieved.Each objective & target and associated program will be documented on EMSF003.The EMS team will meet on a quarterly basis to discuss progress of objectives/targets,identify improvements to the EMS, and implementation of corrective actions. Resources include humanresources and specialized skills, organizational infrastructure, technology and financialresources.Roles, responsibilities and authorities are defined, documented and communicated inorder to facilitate effective environmental management.ABC’s top management has appointed a specific management representative whoirrespective of other responsibilities has defined roles, responsibilities and authority for:a. Ensuring that an EMS is established, implemented and maintained in accordancewith the requirements of the ISO 14001 international standard.b. Reporting to top management on the performance of the EMS for review,including recommendations for improvement.The following personnel and teams have a key role in the EMS:VP of Operations: Is the senior level manager for all operations covered within thescope of the management system and responsible for providing resources fordevelopment and maintenance of the EMS.Director of Quality: Is the environmental management representative (EMR) and hasoverall responsibly for the implementation and maintenance of the EMSEMS Team: The EMS provides direct support to the EMR and assists with thedevelopment and maintenance of the EMS. The Director of Quality, Quality Engineer,and Manufacturing Manager are on the EMS Team.Quality Engineer: Has primary responsibility for legal requirements and regulatorycompliance.Human Resource Manager: Has primary responsibility for the identification andtracking of all employee training including ISO 14001 awareness training, hazardcommunications training and emergency response planning.Maintenance Manager: Has primary responsibility for waste management and controlof utilities.

The training requirements are identified on our Training Matrix (EMSF-0005). Weprovide training or take other action to meet these needs and retain associated recordsaccordingly.ABC has established, implemented and maintained procedures to make personsworking for us (or on our behalf) aware of:a. The importance of conformity with the environmental policy and procedures andwith the requirements of the EMSb. The significant environmental aspects and related actual or potential impactsassociated with their work and the environmental benefits of improved personalperformancec. Their roles and responsibilities in achieving conformity with the requirements ifthe EMS andd. The potential consequences of departure from specified procedures.This information is covered in our ISO 14001 General Awareness program. Thistraining provides all employees with an understanding of the EMS policy, their role insupporting the policy, understanding of significant aspects they impact, and other EMSinformation.4.3.3 CommunicationWith regard to its environmental aspects and EMS ABC has established, implementedand maintained a procedure for internal and external EMS Communication (EMSP-XXXX). This procedure defines:a. Internal communication among various levels and functions of the organizationb. Receiving, documenting and responding to relevant communication from externalinterested parties.

However, when information on our environmental activities isrequested, top management will consider these on a case-by-case basis and theresponse will be documented.4.3.4 DocumentationABC’s EMS documentation includes:a. The environmental policy, objectives and targetsb. A description of the scope of the EMSc. A description of the main elements of the EMS and their interaction andreference to related documentsd. Documents, including records, required by ISO 14001 international standard ande. Documents, including records, determined by ABC to be necessary to ensure theeffective planning, operation and control of processes that relate to its significantenvironmental aspects.This manual is the Level 1 EMS documentation that provides clear linkage to allelements of the EMS.4.3.5 Control of documentsDocuments required by the EMS and by ISO14001 international standard arecontrolled. Records are a special type of document and are controlled in accordancewith the requirements given in 4.5.4.ABC has established, implemented and maintained a procedure to:a. Approve documents for adequacy prior to issueb. Review and update as necessary and re-approve documentsc. Ensure that changes and the current revision status of documents are identifiedd. Ensure that relevant versions of applicable documents are available at points ofusee. Ensure that documents remain legible and readily identifiablef. Ensure that documents of external origin determined by the organization to benecessary for the planning and operation of the EMS are identified and theirdistribution controlled andg. Prevent the unintended use of obsolete documents and apply suitableidentification to them if they are retained for any purpose.Procedure EMSP-XXXX defines process used to control documents.

Establishing, implementing and maintaining a documented procedures to controlsituations where their absence could lead to deviation from the environmentalpolicy, objectives and targets andb. Stipulating the operating criteria in the procedures andc. Establishing, implementing and maintaining procedures related to the identifiedsignificant environmental aspects of goods and services used by ABC andcommunicating applicable procedures and requirements to suppliers, includingcontractors.Operational Control Work Instructions have been developed for the following activities:• EWI001 By Product Management• EWI002 MSDS Management• EWI003 Contractor Control• EWI004 Add additional WIsThe preventative maintenance (PM) process will be used to monitor equipment andprovide for scheduled maintenance activities. Well maintained equipment will helpminimize energy conservation and potential environmental impacts. The emergencyresponse equipment will be maintained in the PM system.4.3.7 Emergency preparedness and responseABC has established, implemented and maintained a procedure (EMSP006) to identifypotential emergency situations and potential accidents that can have an impact(s) onthe environment and how we will respond to them.ABC responds to actual emergency situations and accidents and prevents or mitigatesassociated adverse environmental impacts.ABC periodically reviews and where necessary revises our emergency preparednessand response procedures in particular after the occurrence of accidents or emergencysituations.ABC also periodically tests such procedures (where practicable).ABC has developed an emergency response plan (ERP) that plan response actions forbuilding evacuation, fire, severe weather, chemical spills, and power outages. The ERP

EMS ManualABC Manufacturing – Grand Rapids, MISection:4.5 CheckingEffective Date:Xx/xx/xxRevision:AThis Sheet:13Total Sheets:194.4 CHECKING4.4.1 Monitoring and MeasurementABC has established implemented and maintained procedure to monitor and measureon a regular basis the key characteristics of our operations that can have a significantenvironmental impact. The EMS team has reviewed the identified significantenvironmental aspects and identified the monitoring and measure requirements onSummary of Significant Aspects, Operational Controls, and Monitoring & Measurement(EMSF002). Additional monitoring with be conducted to monitoring the objective &targets and these will be defined within each documented programs. Environmentalperformance will be monitored by establishing key performance indicators and trackinginformation to monitor performance.The preventative maintenance (PM) process will be used to monitor equipment andprovide for scheduled maintenance activities. Well maintained equipment will helpminimize energy conservation and potential environmental impacts. The emergencyresponse equipment will be maintained in the PM system.ABC ensures that calibrated or verified monitoring and measurement equipment is usedand shall retain associated records. Calibration requirements are summarized onEMSF002.4.4.2 Evaluation of Compliance4.5.2.1 Consistent with our commitment to compliance ABC has established,implemented and maintained a procedure(s) for periodically evaluatingcompliance with applicable legal requirements.ABC keeps records of the results of these periodic evaluations.4.5.2.2 ABC evaluates compliance with other requirements to which we subscribe.These evaluations may be combined with the legal compliance evaluations asreferred to in 4.5.2.1 or may involve a separate procedure.Records of these periodic evaluations are maintained.The legal and other requirements are identified on EMSF003. Every 3 years ABC willreview operations to determine compliance with these requirements. The results ofthese audits will be documented and any identified non-compliance issues documentedin the corrective action process.ABC will also evaluate compliance periodically through the internal audit process, safetyinspections, and routine inspections.

Investigating non-conformities, determining their cause(s) and taking actions inorder to avoid their recurrence.c. Evaluating the need for action(s) to prevent non-conformities and implementingappropriate actions designed to avoid their occurrence.d. Recording the results of corrective action(s) and preventive action(s) taken.e. Reviewing the effectiveness of corrective action(s) and preventive actions(s).Actions taken are taken to the magnitude to the problems and the environmentalimpacts encountered.ABC also ensures that any necessary changes are made to the EMS documentation.4.5.4 Control of recordsABC has established and maintained records as necessary to demonstrate conformityto the requirements of its EMS and of the ISO 14001 international standard and theresults achieved.ABC also has established, implemented and maintained a procedure(s) for theidentification, storage, protection, retrieval, retention and disposal of records.• Records at ABC are to remain legible, identifiable and traceable.4.5.5 Internal auditABC has ensured internal audits of the EMS are conducted at planned interval toa.
