1. 1. AN AIRLINES JOURNEY TO DIGITAL MANUALS Jim Guy ABX Air Inc.
 2. 2. Overview

Transitions

Hardcopy, Microfilm, AirGTI, Web PDF, JETView (SGML/XML/XHTML)

Content

Aircraft Manuals, Policy/Procedure Manuals, Air Transportation Oversight System (ATOS)

Technology

SGML/XML – ArborText Tools

MS Basic Programming to OmniMark

Fleet

B767-200 Single Model to Multiple Models

 3. 3. Decision Time

Initial Decisions

1996 – Induction of first B767-200

Conversion of a passenger aircraft to a cargo configuration (PC Modification).

Determined the content requirements.

Determined the media Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML).

Decide on software to manipulate SGML.

Build a business practice to edit SGML content.

 4. 4. Decision Time

Editing/Viewing Decisions

Selected ArborText for SGML editing.

Design Doctype Screen FOSI with Architect.

Train personnel in use of the ArborText tools.

SGML instance burst with Basic Programming

Edit individual fragments with ArborText Adept Editor.

Rebuild SGML instance with Basic programming.

Create “graphic entity list” with basic programming

Validate assembled SGML document with OmniMark.

Used Jouve Data Managements’ AirGTI viewer.

 5. 5. PRODUCTION OF AIRCRAFT MANUALS

1998 – Produced first Suite of manuals (AMM, FIM, & AIPC) for the maintenance of 25 B767-281 aircraft.

1999 - Converted DC8 & DC9 microfilm manuals to SGML documents (AMM & IPC).

2000 – Added 4 B767-231 and one B767-205 aircraft to the fleet and incorporated in the Suite of aircraft manuals.

This required the merging of 3 copies of each the AMM, FIM, & AIPC.

 6. 6. DEVELOPMENT OF INTRANET PUBLICATIONS

2002 – Developed an Intranet site in ABX Air, posted Policy/Procedure Manuals in PDF format.

Discovered very quickly that the PDF formatted documents were slow to open at the client’s computer.

2003 – Started exploring XML conversion of aircraft as well as Airline Policy/Procedure Manuals. Using ArborText Interchange product proved the concept of converting FrameMaker documents to XML.

 7. 7. GROWTH BRINGS CHANGES

2004 – Discovered the Basic Programming and SED scripting were creating anomalies in the SGML documentation.

Created OmniMark programming to not only parse the SGML but prepare, split, validate, quality check content, assemble, and create graphic entity listings.

2005 – Shared in the ArborText Users Convention in Disney World the use of Interchange to convert FrameMaker to XML.

2006 – ABX Air purchased 12 each B767-232 aircraft and converted them to the Special Freighter SF configuration.

 8. 8. GROWTH BRINGS CHANGE

Late 2006 - ABX Air moved forward with the Stilo Corporation in development of a Microsoft Internet Explorer based viewer for the aircraft manuals, and airline Policy/Procedure manuals.

2007 – ABX Air added a B767-223 aircraft also converted to the SF modification.

Alpha and beta tested the IE based viewer named JETView (Just Enough Technology).

2008 – Now with 5 different B767-200 models in the fleet ABX Air has the largest fleet of these aircraft in the world. ABX Air develops an interface with the XML documents for ATOS compliance management.

 9. 9. LESSONS LEARNED

Selection of software took research in determining which was the most user friendly for writers to use.

The decision to use digital manuals for aircraft maintenance was for the good of the airline rather than economically justified.

Document Management System not required until 6 models of aircraft were acquired. The documents were easily controlled in a directory structure.

MS Basic routines have a limitation when manipulating SGML or XML documents.

 10. 10. ABX AIR IN DIGITAL MANUALS

Demo of JETView

Questions?
