1. 1. Print project Media Studies AS: Foundation Portfolio Jessica Duxbury
 2. 2. Introduction

My project was an alternative magazine. Working alone I have achieved my initial ideas, Shown on the front cover, contents page and article :

Rebellious atmosphere

Subtle colour scheme

Mixed Genre

Attitude

 3. 3. Developing The Magazine

Aimed for all alternative genres and people.

Designed to be similar to KERRANG! But more rebellious.

Gothic horror convention by having model pose in front of church.

Mode of addresses in pictures, shows attitude and rebellion.

Realism of the magazine
 4. 4.

Font shows attitude and rebellion, like KERRANG’s logo.

Keeps with target group aimed for.

Colourful but subtle.

Font use similar to KERRANG’s Logo Audience feedback
 5. 5. Representing The Alternative Social Group

Target group is alternative which means a less mainstream look.

Mise-en-scene: Scene/emo Backcombed hair, hair extensions.

Front Cover: heavy metal, hard rock artists in corner adds to mixed genre magazine.

Mixed Genre Shows its aimed for all alternative people.
 6. 6.

Typical outlook of teens are: trouble makers and rebellious.

Alternative music seen as promoting violence.

In article made a point artist is doing the opposite.

‘ I was sick to death of hearing how Goths and Mosher’s etc were making the world violent and a screwed up place if you listen to my lyrics rather then the music itself it doesn’t promote violence’ Part of the article mentioning most alternative peoples feelings, that they hate their music style being constantly misrepresented as promoting violence.
 7. 7. Music Institution

Bauer Consumer Media Publisher of KERRANG!

Also does KERRANG! radio station.

January- July 2008: £60,290.

January- July 2009: £43, 253.

‘ ROARAGE’ unique magazine mixed genre

Wider Audience, Higher profit

 8. 8. The Audience

Alternative teenagers to young adults (15-20)

Still in education (high school, College, University) Some are more likely unemployed, others weekend jobs.

Socio Economic Scale E, C1-C2.

Teenage artist newly discovered, average teenagers inspire to be rock-stars so higher interest in story.

‘ Rikku went from a guitarist in an unknown band to becoming one of the most talked about rock star in the world’ Opening introduction to article.
 9. 9. Attracting The Audience Title aimed to be rebellious and obvious its aimed for all alternatives Realism by having posters and realistic storylines Mise-en-scene of artist to make her look emo/scene
 10. 10. Contents page has realistic stories, reviews of other bands and quotations just like real magazines, colour scheme is bright to match picture Real magazine’s pictures are usually dominating, which I have succeeded to achieve in doing
 11. 11. Colourful background appealing to audiences eye. Picture is high key lighting so artist is seen. Layout neat and organised to keep audience interested and not to confuse them. ‘ my lyrics rather then the music itself it doesn’t promote violence’ Part of the article, destroying ideology which the media makes saying that alternative music promotes violence and suicides. Daily Mail Article on Emo/Goth
 12. 12. Preliminary Task Editing of the picture isn’t smooth, this was improved on final product, most didn’t notice the editing of the pictures, on the ROARage magazine. Less appealing storylines on front cover, Overall front cover of the magazine is bland Target group of magazine is unclear.
