Critical Opinion• Fraser McAlpine of BBC Bloggave the album a positive review stating:Let’s start with the voice. It’s a beautiful, expressive thing: high and clear, withthe occasional emotive crack. The pretty melodies and tweeting harmonies(literally, in some cases) are rendered snoozily, as if Eliza’s vocals were recordedjust after waking and stretching from a dream-filled sleep.Michael HannThe GuardianIts hard not to jump to this conclusion about Eliza Doolittle: if Lily Allen sticks toher pledge to retire from music, theres a sparky-young-woman-sized gap in themarket into which she can skip. Her debut album, due in summer, is cut from asimilar cloth to Allens – a collage of tastefully chosen vintage samples, overwhich she trills her tales of being 21 and pretty in London.
Influenced By..This is a short interview I found online in which Eliza explains how her musical parentsand upbringing have influenced her and the sort of music she listens to – whichinfluenced her music.
Influenced ByAfter listening to Eliza’s album it is apparent thatshe has had an impact on three main female Britishpop artists Amy Winehouse, Kate Nash and LilyAllen. Her sound reflects a modern jazz and funk, whichsends off a vintage vibe. She has an excellent bandof 2 or 3 multi instrumentalists who playinstruments such as the ukulele, double bass, guitarand more. This is all merged in to give a 50s stylelook by dressing them in retro pin strippedshirts, white chinos and bow ties. All matching – ofcourse
How Eliza represents herself as a ‘Pop Artist’Pop is a very general genre to specify however I feel that Eliza Doolittlemanages to portray pop in a very sweet endearing way with a moderntouch. Most would associate pop with Britney Spears or the Spice Girlshowever I feel that pop has a new element to it and a more meaningfulundertones in the sounds and the lyrics.Eliza has very sleepy, girly tune to her tracks and voice which make hermusic sound innocent and sweet – this is why I like her music.Eliza is similar to other pop artist yet she has a very individualstyle, and manages to pull of fashion in a very different way to most(you wouldn’t catch her in anything but shorts or dress’s).
How Eliza represents herself asa ‘Pop Artist’Eliza strived to be an original pop artist and this reflectson her music.Over all looking at Eliza Doolittle she is is not a 1stgeneration pop artist and takes inspiration from hertheatrical upbringing and other soul/jazz artists. Themore mainstream tracks don’t indicate this howeverthe other tracks on her album do reflect this.
Eliza Doolittle ‘Image’As Eliza has only released one album she is still not thatrecognised as a ‘leading poop artist’ but she does has avery individual image. She has had a good reception fromthe British public and is often described as being a‘quirky’ and ‘fun’ this makes her more loveable. She is notonly recognised through her music, she is a fashion icontoo and encourages young people to express themselvesthrough music and fashion and hopes that her music canencourage this.
