The Integration Project aims to create an online platform and mobile app to help migrants learn English and cultural skills through short practical modules, local information, and an online community, with the goal of providing convenient and affordable language education and integration resources for migrants in Sydney, Australia.

The Integration Project aims to help migrants develop linguistic & cultural skills to adapt to their host country.
The main objective is to design a platform which is cost effective and practical so users access regularly.
For the purposes of this assignment we are using Sydney, Australia as the destination point.

This section will be presented in English but other languages will be available.
The aim is to provide guidance for the users welfare and by providing an
essential service driving traffic to the platform
It may be possible that this part of the platform could generate revenue
through advertising from government departments, letting agents & job
agencies

Discussion boards to encourage an online community that help each other to
adjust to life in their new city/country
This section is to foster a community for users
Users will be encouraged to post information others may find useful and
leave feedback on their own experiences
A gamified reward point system is incorporated to encourage activity and
interaction of users
Boards linked to the English language course will be grouped separately

Social and cultural event updates
Twitter-like updates on cultural events to encourage migrant users to integrate
with what is happening in area
Posts on events will have limited characters available but can also contain
links. Users may be time poor therefore information concerning events they
don’t yet feel connected to has to be concise

Short modules for practical English lessons
Low level modules will be restricted to 3-5 hour sessions. This is due to the
type of language input at this level. It is also to give students a faster sense of
accomplishment to motivate them further
Students are allocated different level as they progress through the course.
When a student starts the course they are assigned a ‘buddy’ from a higher
grade. Later, as they move up to the higher levels they assigned a buddy from
a lower level. Buddies offer help & advice and help foster the community
element of the learning environment
The modules also incorporate a gamified point system that encourages and
rewards students’ accomplishment and involvement in the community

Modules will include input sessions and testing but will focus on practical skills
Example 1: Lower level language learners will take a ‘Getting started’ module
which includes; greetings, numbers, giving personal details, asking for
information etc.
Example 2: Higher level language learners will take a ‘CVs & Interviews’
module to help them develop language skills for gaining employment
Students can work at their own pace but can only progress through the first
modules sequentially

Entry level modules will be assessed through online multiple choice questions
and therefore will not require a tutor to assist except to monitor message
boards for questions
Buddies for this level will have the same linguistic background where possible

Level 2 modules will require even more free practise exercises and will
encourage students to work in pairs and groups
Tutors for these modules will have office hours where students can sign in to
message directly with questions and assess assignments
Students will be assigned a new ‘primary’ buddy who they can only
communicate with in English at this module

Encourage students to create & collaborate using their own interests to further their
language skills

Level 3 modules will require students to develop their own learning plans and
reflect on their own cognitive processes
Tutors will encourage group work and peer correction but will assess some
assignments
Students will be encouraged to submit suggestions for group work based on
their own learning needs
Students will be assigned as a buddy to lower level students

Students collaborate on more challenging tasks such as creating podcasts or videos
Content that reflects students interests
Use local media as source material to further students cultural integration
Encourage students to blog as a group reporting on what they have read, seen, experienced

Though they may work we expect they will have a limited income so it is
essential access is cheap and easy
Downloading materials particularly for the language course will be an essential
component as some users may not have access to mobile internet devices
Convenience of access is the most essential component of this project
