  2. 2. In this tutorial we will be learning how to save selections with alpha channels in Photoshop. An alpha channel is basically a saved selection. Using alpha channels is very important to anyone who needs to use Photoshop for photo editing or compositing. We will be covering how to save selections, load selections and how to make a layer mask. To follow this tutorial all you need is a basic knowledge of Photoshop, access to the program, and a desire to learn. Introduction
  3. 3. <ul>Open an image in Photoshop by choosing the file menu select open, find your image and click open. </ul>
  4. 4. <ul>Create a selection using any of the selection tools in the tools palette. </ul>
  5. 5. <ul>Make sure your layers palette is open, if not go to the windows drop down menu and choose layers. </ul>
  6. 6. <ul>In the layers palette switch over to the channels palette. </ul>
  7. 7. <ul>Now you can save your selection by either pulling down the selections menu and choosing save selection or, at the bottom of the channels palette choose the icon that saves a selection as a channel </ul>

  9. 9. <ul>To use the selection again, return to the selections menu and select load selection. you can now use selection for adjustments or for a mask in another image. </ul>
  10. 10. <ul>To use the selection, or alpha channel, as a mask in another image, open up the new image, while the original image with alpha channel is still open. </ul>
  11. 11. <ul>Click on the alpha channel and drag it into the new image. </ul>
  12. 12. <ul>Switch to the layers palette and select the add vector mask icon at the bottom of the palette. </ul>
  13. 13. <ul>You now have a mask of the alpha channel you created . </ul>
  14. 14. Conclusion Now that you know how to use alpha channels you can make adjustments to certain areas of a photo, or create a layer mask for compositing. There are no limits to your creativity.
