We started by defining stages in the product development process which put users at the centre. In our case, the process starts with site visits or interviews. This involves members of the development team (this could be developers, designers, editorial staff, senior managers etc.) going out and speaking to the users not about any particular product, but just about what they do, what information sources they use, what their concerns are. From this we start to identify user needs (what do they want to get from a product we supply), then we look at the profile of our users from research data (what proportion occupy which job role etc.). From qualitative and quantitative research we develop personas. Using all this background and knowledge of what content we can offer, wireframes are developed. We can seek user feedback whether we have basic wireframes or flat visuals. The next stage is usability testing of a working prototype to identify issues to fix. The process is a cycle which is ongoing – even when a product is live we will still need to revisit the site visits in a little while to ensure we are continually up to date with user needs.
We create detailed personas for our websites based on research data. As our users are professionals in different industries, job role is often a key differentiator for us. Interestingly personas have connected really well with lots of our teams including Marketing, Editorial, Sales and Management as well as Designers / Developers. They are a great communication tool.
These are some of the tools we use: Snap (survey creation and data analysis), Keynote Webeffective (remote usability tool), Snagit (Screen capture), Notable (Online screen capture with notes feature) and Balsamiq (mock ups). There are lots of alternatives out there – this is just our selection. Learn off and on the job – obviously learning through experience is vital but I’ve also found training courses at HFI, the dConstruct conference and working towards my MSc at Kingston Uni helpful in getting up to speed with all aspects of usability.
Suppliers can be very helpful in allowing you to cover more ground. Particular benefits are the facilities, qualification and tools they may have. Budget needs to be available.
You need to promote UX best practice through the organisation. One way we do this is through our toolkit reference source which contains articles and links on all the above. Other ways are through training, presentations and internal events.
There will always be new challenges to embedding usability as new technologies prompt new products to be developed. Make sure you’re ready!
