  • 10. After waiting all day without a drop to drink or bite to eat, as per presurgicalinstructions, I finally found out that they wouldn’t be able to take me forsurgery today to insert my port after all. A full day of scheduled procedures+ an emergency added to the schedule at the last minute meant that theyjust woudn’t get to me today. So at 3:15 I was able to eat breakfast andhave my morning Diet Coke. The nurses finally found me another room too – I woke at 6 a.m. to thesound of banging on the walls and power drills shortly thereafter, as thehospital pit crew deconstructed the room next to me. I don’t know what theywere doing exactly, but the door was covered with layers of plastic sheetingand even the nurses weren’t to knock. I’m happy to be moved down the hall, even if it did mean lying on the couch in the family waiting room most of theday, until they were able to find me a bed in another room.Toddler Planet AUGUST 2012 JESSICA GOTTLIEB JESSICA@JESSICAGOTTLIEB.COM
  • 11. im sure every year i write about it - about the beautiful hideousness that isoncology at the holidays. in the past, im sure ive used words like poignant. thisyear i think ill use sucks - infinitely less poetic, but oh so accurate.when your well-meaning spouse and kids say tell me about your day, youll thinkwith equal parts truth and cynicism you dont mean that. because heres the thing -i really dont have the words...and if i find them - watch out - you seriously mightregret asking.but theyll keep asking and the patients that occupy much of your time and yourmental space will become known to your family on some level:mom, hows your surfer doing? - hes hanging in therehows the gardener? - shes doing greathows the young mom? - shes not doing so well OncRN AUGUST 2012 JESSICA GOTTLIEB JESSICA@JESSICAGOTTLIEB.COM

  • 13. NOT ALL REVIEWS ARE CREATED EQUAL Too bad I cannot give them a zero. My dad has been a patient here numerous times. My dad was diagnosed with cancer last Christmas plus I found out that there were other things wrong too. I feel that city of hope did not help my dad. My dad passed away on Valentines day. I really miss my dad. I will not recommend this hospital to anyone. Yelp AUGUST 2012 JESSICA GOTTLIEB JESSICA@JESSICAGOTTLIEB.COM
  • 14. SOME REVIEWS NEED TO BE ADDRESSEDThis is an update of my recent review. The nurses at City of Hope are fantastic; howeverthey are limited to what the doctor orders. Currently, we do not have a primary oncologistbecause the oncologist does not want to be responsible for any of my family memberscare. The primary oncologist wouldnt even do hydration for him, even though his chiefcomplaint of the inability to drink water was written through this doctor[sic].All I know is that there is not one main oncologist who will provide consistent care for usat City of Hope. There is a pain specialist at COH that truly does everything she can tohelp us, but even she is limited. There is only 2 pain specialists at COH, a hospitalreknowned for cancer care. Cancer causes a lot of pain, so how come they dont hiremore pain specialists? There really is a management problem at this hospital. If we didnt get to admit him in, wewouldnt have been able to see the pain specialist and radiologist when we needed to. AUGUST 2012 JESSICA GOTTLIEB JESSICA@JESSICAGOTTLIEB.COM
