The undutchables an observation of the netherlands bloody funny

  1. 1. The Undutchables: An Observation of the Netherlands, Its Culture And Its Inhabitants by Laurie Boucke Read It Twice.Ive owned a copy of this book since 1992, the year I left Holland to be anexchange student, though that was not the first time I was forced to seeHolland through foreign eyes. My late father was English, and he instilledin me the same critical view of the Netherlands that he had had all his life(that part spent in Holland, anyway). Critical, but also amused, bemused, bewildered, niggled, worried, and occasionally utterly gobsmacked. Hewould often express his wonder in the most hilarious deadpan, which isexactly what this book reminds me of. It is written in a hilarious style thatwill appeal to both sides of the American humor/British humour divide.Although the authors are critical, there is not an ounce of ill-will or malice. The observations should make any Cloggie (clog-wearing Dutch person -geddit??) giggle with recognition. Even we Dutch know we can be pretty
  2. 2. rude at times (though we usually refer to it as direct), and lets be honest, the Dutch do wear ridiculous shoes, and have a knack f or consuminglashings of coffee during cigarette breaks. Not that that is all there is to it.What the authors do is what I would consider good-natured ribbing. At thesame time, one can tell they have spent quite a bit of time there. But Im not going to give the game away. The book is hilarious, and if youare Dutch and you can laugh at yourself you will enjoy this all the more. Ifyou see in this work an attack on the Dutch, then youve missed the pointentirely. So whether you are, or know a Dutchie who wants a different perspectiveor youre a confused tourist of the Lowlands, or you have an interest inHolland in general, do read this book. You may even turn into anUndutchable yourself.
