Natural Teeth Whitening Methods
We read about teeth whitening products almost on a daily basis. Be it magazines, ezines, fliers, such
methods and medications are everywhere. With such a wide range of products how to tell if some will
work for you or not? Obviously, it is very difficult to tell that, and you can never be so sure if some
method will indeed work for you without causing any side-effects. Talking about the side-effects-yes,
such synthetic products can give you side effects. So, why take a chance at all? Why not start using the
natural products that will help you get your teeth whiter without causing major side effects! Let us
discuss about the effective natural teeth whitening options today.
1. Using Lemon Juice: Lemon juice has natural bleaching properties that will help whiten the teeth
when you use lemon juice on your teeth. You can either rub it directly using your brush or you
can use the peel to rub on your teeth without using your toothbrush. However, a word of
caution! Lemon juice is acidic in nature and can cause erosion of your tooth enamel if you use it
regularly or if you use it over unhealthy enamel. Dentists do not recommend lemon juice for the
same reason. But it has been seen that if you use it once a week or so, it doesn’t exert its
harmful effects.
2. Using Baking Soda: Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate is known for its cleaning and deodorizing
properties. You can use it with your toothpaste to get the best results. Alternatively, you can apply it
directly over your teeth by putting some of it in water and then rubbing the solution over your teeth.
Baking soda helps to make your teeth stain-free and enhances their natural shine. But again, its use

should be limited to once or at the most twice a week because it can also damage the enamel due to its
abrasive properties.
3. Using Strawberries: Strawberries work as a good home remedy for natural teeth whitening. If you rub
these over your teeth and wash your teeth immediately afterward, they naturally cleanse your teeth
and remove stains. It might seem counter-intuitive that strawberries can stain clothes, then how can
they remove stain from teeth. But this fruit has good cleansing properties due to its acidic nature. You
can also mix the paste with your toothpaste to avoid the hassle of rubbing and cleaning your teeth
twice-first with strawberries and then with toothpaste or water. Their use should also be limited due to
their acidic nature and enamel eroding properties when used in excess.
4. Using Wood ash: Wood ash and specifically, hard wood ash has been used as an agent for cleaning
teeth for long before toothpastes were discovered. Wood ash contains potassium hydroxide, a powerful
bleaching agent to whiten your teeth. However, this should also be avoided regularly to avoid any
enamel problems.
5. Using Apple Cider Vinegar: This is also an ancient and effective natural teeth whitening remedy. It
also works due to its acidic properties and helps remove stains from teeth. It can be applied directly or
after mixing with soda too. You can either apply it directly over your teeth or do gargles with it to avoid
bad odor and stains on your teeth.
There are many more natural teeth whitening methods and remedies apart from the ones listed above
such as- rubbing orange or sage leaf, brushing your teeth with almond peel, salt, neem twigs etc.
It is important to remember that you should use these remedies in a limited way because even the
natural methods can cause enamel erosion if used excessively. Ideally, you should brush and floss your
teeth regularly, avoid drinking too much coffee or any drinks that stain teeth. If you do drink such
beverages, you should rinse off your mouth after drinking these to avoid stains, though avoiding them
altogether will work the best for your general health as well as dental health. Brushing your teeth daily
alone will benefit you by avoiding permanent staining, and flossing your teeth will help in keeping a
good dental hygiene and health of your gums.

Apart from these avoid drinking water or sodas with high fluorine in them. Some mouthwashes have
high fluorine in them, and you should avoid using them. Rather use fluorine-free mouthwashes or
natural mouthwashes.
Pregnant females should avoid using tetracycline antibiotics as they cause teeth staining in the baby
apart from other adverse effects. As we all know that prevention is better than cure, so you should
always try to avoid such practices that will harm your teeth in anyway, and adopt those that will benefit
you in the long run.
