  • 1. Elements of Design on the Web Jennifer L. Katzer Matthew A. Heflin Nevin P. Jones
  • 2. Google SimplicityGoogle shows simplicity because there is nothing on thehomepage. It is white space, a logo, and a search bar. There is alittle advertisement, but it’s tiny and almost invisible. This helpspeople stay focused on their task as they search.
  • 3. Mumford and Sons EmphasisMumford and Sons’ website represents emphasis because the center image andtext really captures the eye. The visual weight is high because it’s so busy. Thisemphasis is helped by the blank blue frame on most sides.
  • 4. HBO Go Scale and ProportionIt has a large main banner contrasted with smaller icons at the bottom. You see the largebanner first then are attracted by the repetition of the smaller links.
  • 5. Tumblr RhythmThe white blurbs repeat all the way down the page and never end. This creates repetitionthat emphasizes a rhythm that locks the viewer in and keeps them scrolling.
  • 6. NBC BalanceExample of symmetrical balance with the emphasis in the center with a large, dark headerseparating the upper and main lower parts of the page.
  • 7. MountainDew.com VarietyThere is variety in texture, size of icons, and pop-ups that engage as you mouse over eachtile.
  • 8. Netflix UnityThis one shows unity by similarity, proximity, and alignment of each tile or movie cover. Eachtile is similar in shape. They are close together, evenly spaced apart, and arranged in a grid.
