    1. A Brief History of Design Art Nouveau (early 1900s) First new decorative style of the twentieth century. Associated with organic curving decorative elements. Old customs, habits, and artistic styles sat alongside new, combining a wide range of contradictory images and ideas. Belief that everything should work in harmony to create "total work of art.” This applied to buildings, furniture, textiles, clothes and jewelry.
