  3. 3. Why do students need motivation? <ul><li>To help them develop skills </li></ul><ul><li>To take ownership in their learning. </li></ul><ul><li>To be empowered </li></ul><ul><li>To be engaged. </li></ul>
  4. 4. The 6 C’s <ul><li>Choice </li></ul><ul><li>Challenge </li></ul><ul><li>Control </li></ul><ul><li>Collaboration </li></ul><ul><li>Construct Meaning </li></ul><ul><li>Consequences </li></ul>

Choice <ul><li>Choice is allowing the students to </li></ul><ul><li>pick what they learn (when appropriate), or how they do a task. </li></ul><ul><li>Choice is important to students so that they know they have ownership of learning </li></ul><ul><li>Students can choose activities at their level that appeal to them. </li></ul>
  6. 6. CFU-Check for Understanding <ul><li>What are some words that are similar to motivation? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>incentive, drive </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Why is choice important in motivation? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Choice gives students power in learning. </li></ul></ul>

Control <ul><li>Students need to have control: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Decision making </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Organizing content </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Choosing partners (when appropriate) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Students need to feel a sense of </li></ul><ul><li>control in their learning, this </li></ul><ul><li>gives them a sense of ownership. </li></ul><ul><li>Keep choices limited to avoid student </li></ul><ul><li>anxiety. They are provided with sense of independence, and responsibility. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Challenge <ul><li>Challenge is considered the difficulty level of an assignment. </li></ul><ul><li>Students should be challenged without being overwhelmed. </li></ul><ul><li>Example: If a student is reading independently at a level 7, have him/her read a level 8 book. </li></ul>
  9. 9. CFU <ul><li>Why is control important for students when motivating them? </li></ul><ul><li>How does challenge motivate students? </li></ul>
  10. 10. Collaboration <ul><li>Students need to be taught to work together effectively. </li></ul><ul><li>Working together helps students learn from themselves and each other. </li></ul><ul><li>“Two heads are better than one” </li></ul>

Constructing Meaning <ul><li>Students need to make meaning of what they learn based on how they learn. </li></ul><ul><li>Metacognitive Moments: Students think about how they learned. </li></ul><ul><li>Setting goals leads to meaningful learning </li></ul><ul><li>Authentic assessment and activities helps with constructing meaning. </li></ul>
  12. 12. Consequences (Good ones) <ul><li>Feeling of accomplishment </li></ul><ul><li>Providing for all to succeed at some task. </li></ul><ul><li>Being appreciated helps with motivation </li></ul><ul><li>The best motivator is praise from the teacher! </li></ul>

Connecting to Technology (7 th C perhaps) <ul><li>Technology is a great motivator! </li></ul><ul><li>Helps visual learners with concept attainment </li></ul><ul><li>Technology is interactive, so students are active learners rather than passive. </li></ul><ul><li>Technology provides for more challenge! </li></ul><ul><li>Technology is an attention grabber. </li></ul>
