West Ashley High School is part of the Jefferson Awards Students In Action program, designed in partnership with Deloitte to pass the tradition of service on to the next generation.

In the wake of the Haiti earthquake, schools across the country came up with ways to help, and here is what the students of West Ashley High School have done so far.

  • Haiti Water Project - Overview
    • Project Name: Haiti Water Project
    • Project Description:
    • We are raising funds to purchase a water filter through Water Missions International, which would provide clean water for 5,000 people a day.
    • Goal: We plan to raise $4,000 by February 19th.
    • Tactics:
      • Class competition between the seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen.
        • The class that raises the most money wins an award, TBA.
      • Donations will be taken in the lunch room and 4 designated classrooms.
      • Solicit donations during Leadership Development from teachers and administrators

      • Gained Principal’s approval
      • Public support has been earned through both Students in Action and other public networking sites
      • Project announced during the January Jefferson Awards
      • Jan. 28- Collection bins have been stationed and we have begun the first round of collections
      • First student collection group deployed
      • A week after beginning The Haiti Water Project, we began to document fund collections and released our first status update to the student body.

  • Teens for Jeans- Overview
    • Project Name: Teens for Jeans
    • Project Description:
    • Through the help and encouragement of our local Aeropostale store, students of the West Ashley student body donate lightly worn jeans for collection and donation to Haiti children.
    • Goal: 100 pairs of jeans by February 28 th
    • Tactics:
      • Through our partnership with local Aeropostale stores, we are able to offer a 25% discount off of their next purchase to those who donate a pair of jeans. (This does not include shorts or dress pants, though they are accepted for donation)

    • Additional Support: Aeropostale
  • Teens for Jeans- Status Update
    • Teens for Jeans
      • Project approval was attained at the beginning of the month of February
      • Boxes were placed in classes and throughout the school during the first week of February
      • Project was announced to the student body during morning announcements
      • As of February15th, 82 jeans have been collected and delivered to Aeropostale to be sent to Haitians in need.
