  • 1. What Every Woman Needs ToKnow About Self-Defense
  • 2. When it comes to female self defense, manywomen believe that if they can just make a lotof noise with a whistle or an alarm, it will beenough to scare off a would-be attacker andsummon help.Sadly, this is not always the case.
  • 3. Many things can go wrong with this plan. For example, a woman could be taken bysurprise and unable to sound an alarm. If the alarm is sounded, the attacker mightbe enraged by it and the attack worsened.
  • 4. As we all know, in this day and age, criesfor help are often ignored. What options do women have for selfdefense? In this article, we will discusssome of the most effective defenseoptions for women available today.
  • 5. Women are very often victims of rape, domestic violence, purse snatching, carjacking, muggings stalkingand/or threats.
  • 6. Assailants often correctly believe thatwomen will be easy targets and will notdefend themselves. In one way, thisworks in a woman’s favor becauseif she does fight back, she will have theelement of surprise on her side.
  • 7. One of the first and best methods of femaleself defense is precaution.
  • 8. To avoid becoming the target of an assault,it is wise for anyone to avoid high crimeareas, develop a buddy system with afriend and always be alert and awareof surroundings.
  • 9. Make an effort to display confidence, competence and strength so as not to besingled out as weak and vulnerable.
  • 10. It is a good idea for all people to stay fit andstrong; however, for women this has theadded attraction of making them lesslikely to be targeted for assault.
  • 11. One excellent way to stay fit and strongand gain an effective means of female selfdefense is to take up martial arts or someother form of unarmed (empty-handed)fighting technique.
  • 12. Taking this sort of training is empoweringand helps a woman develop a sense ofconfidence and security that may, in itself, help prevent her being attacked.
  • 13. While it is true that these precautions foravoiding being attacked apply to both menand women, the fact is women statistically aremore likely to fall prey to assailants.
  • 14. In fact, women are approximatelytwenty-five percent more likely to bevictims of violent crime than men.
  • 15. For this reason, it is important that womenknow and practice common sense methodsof avoiding potentially dangerous situationsas a first line of defense against attack.
  • 16. There are a number of ways womencan practice prevention as a meansof self defense in the home.
  • 17. Keeping a dog is a good idea. Even a smalldog will deter break-ins because of the noiseand unpredictability of the animal.
  • 18. Large dogs may be more immediatelyimpressive; however, it is important that awoman choose a watchdog that is a goodmatch for her ability to train and handle it.
  • 19. An effective bond between mistress anddog will result in better protection whenthe chips are down.
  • 20. All people should be careful of leavingwindows unlocked or leaving the homeunattended for lengthy periods of time, but this is especially true for women.
  • 21. If the home is to be unattended for severaldays due to vacation or some other reason,it is important to have a neighbor bring in themail and newspapers and turn lights off andon in various parts of the house to avoidencouraging break-ins and potential assaults.
  • 22. What about being armedas a means offemale self defense?
  • 23. There are a number of different types ofaerosol sprays on the market these days thatare intended for use in self defense.
  • 24. Pepper spray is a very common form ofaerosol defense spray that has been quiteprominent in recent news. This spray worksby blinding the assailant, constricting theairways and inflicting pain. A Scoville HeatUnit rating between one and two million isadvised for greatest effectiveness.
  • 25. We hear a lot about tasers in the news thesedays. These potentially lethal weapons workby shooting metal barbs connected toelectrified wires into the intended target.
  • 26. We hear a lot about tasers in the news thesedays. These potentially lethal weapons workby shooting metal barbs connected toelectrified wires into the intended target.
  • 27. This is understandably effective; however, regulations regarding permission to carry ataser vary from locality to locality. Before awoman pursues this defense option, it wouldbe wise to consult local police and an attorneyto be sure of all applicable laws.
  • 28. Female self defense with firearms is not ascommon as the use of aerosol sprays ortasers; however, today many women dopurchase guns to defend themselves.
  • 29. Women who choose this self defenseoption must avail themselves of propertraining to learn how to safely handleand maintain a firearm.
  • 30. Following this, any woman who hopes tobe able to use a firearm for protection mustparticipate in regular target practice forultimate comfort and accuracy in theuse of the weapon. Proper licensingand registration is a must.
  • 31. Hand-held bludgeons such as the Kubota(a 6-inch metal cylinder), clubs, bats andso on are a poor alternative for self defensefor most women. The same is true of optionssuch as brass knuckles or knives.
  • 32. The reason for this is that, for thesealternatives to be wielded effectively, thecombatants must be in close quarters and theperson wielding the weapon must be quitestrong, bold and accurate.
  • 33. The fact of the matter is, these types ofweapons are easy for an assailant to takeaway and use against a woman who attemptsto use them for self defense.
  • 34. Female self defense is an important topicand one all women and their families, friends and acquaintances shouldtake quite seriously.
  • 35. Most women can stay safe by avoidingsituations in which they are likely to bevictimized.
  • 36. Adding a layer of protection by staying fitand strong, learning about self defenseand practicing smart safety awareness habitsin the home is extremely wise.
