Annual two month field course, founded in 1946
Focus on undergraduate level research

Week 1: Training , excursions, and lectures
Weeks 2-7: Core program
Mass balance measurements
GPS survey
Week 8: Debrief, synthesis, and research presentations

Physical Geography
Funding: FGER Grant Recipient, home department
Outcomes: UK Polar Network, RGS Ambassador, Undergraduate Dissertation
Now: PhD student, UCL
Ruth Heindel (VT, USA)
1st year undergraduate
Geology-Biology
Funding: NASA grant, home department
Outcomes: Semester in Svalbard (UNIS) & related dissertation
Other 2007 Alums include two Fulbright scholars (New Zealand & Norway) who are pursuing further polar research, multiple PhD students in polar science, and a climate science / public policy researcher, among others.

Beyond JIRP
Participants followed up with wide-reaching outreach activities
Inspired active participation in IPY legacy programs (APECS, etc.)
Participants remain in close personal & professional contact many years later
Repeat participation and dedication to the program
