  • 2. Wikipedia overview
    Wikipedia is a massive collection of research articles created by the public. The information provided on Wikipedia changes frequently and it is provided by outside sources. Wiki stands for “quick information” in Hawaiian.
    Users may log in and edit an article, but the article must be approved by Wikipedia authors before being published.
    The web site was called Nupedia when it first appeared on the internet viewable by the public in 2000.
    Wikipedia appeared in 2001, a month before the 9/11 attacks which appeared on the homepage of Wikipedia.
    Wikipedia bases its information on external links and references.
    Wikipedia is also a platform for other wiki’s such as MediaWiki and WikiNews.
  • 3. Wikipedia pro’s and con’s
    The advantages of using Wikipedia are being able to get quick information on articles about anything.
    Wikipedia is monitored based on accuracy.
    Most of the information is relevant to the topic.
    Each article has reliable sources to backup the information presented.
    Information on Wikipedia may not be accurate.
    Anyone can vandalize articles.
    Personal ideology is used at times, so information in the article may not be official.

    Articles can be viewable in different languages, such as Dutch, Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, and French.
    You may provide feedbacks to the authors of the articles and also read the article.
    If you visit the Main page, it includes the news of what is happening around the world.
    The main page includes what happened on the date you viewed the page, such historical events, and famous people’s birthdays.

    WikiAnswers– Simple answers provided by people for people.
    WikiCollecting – Community based on guiding users to the world of collecting.
    WikiMapia – Uses Google maps with a wiki system.
    Wikispecies – A directory of species.
    Wikitravel – Travel guide.
  • 6. Wikipedia usage
    Groups can use this for real examples from real people and what their different views are on information.
  • 7. Steps into creating a Wikipedia account
    1. At the top right corner of the page, click onto log in/ create account button.
    2. At log in page, click “create one”.
    3. Fill in verification box.
    4. Create a username, password and enter your email address in.
    5. Click CREATE ACCOUNT.
