  • 12. What you see in this picture?
Is it a Young lady or old lady?
  • 13. The “perception” paradigm
    Logic Vs Perception
Logic says: “If I am right, you are wrong”
Perception says: “We could disagree on the same point, but still both of us can be correct”
Human beings, most of the times think that they are logical, but actually operate based on perceptions
Doesn’t mean you need to agree for anything and everything
This means developing understanding for others (“I got it”)
    Opens up new possibilities
  • 14. Outside Vs Inside
What an individual actually says outside will be way different from what he actually feels. It takes lot of “listening” to understand the core issue for handling perceptions effectively
  • 15. Hearing Vs Listening
We communicate in four major ways:
    Reading
    Writing
    Talking
    Listening
Unfortunately listening is given “lowest” priority in our conversations, which creates all the issues
Not much formal education/coaching on this topic
    Hearing Vs Listening:
Hearing – “What I want to get from this conversation”
Listening – “What you want to say in this conversation”
Listening takes lot of effort to learn and practice
  • 16. What does it take to listen?
“First seek to understand, then be understood” by Stephen Covey
  • 17. Same Dialogues - Revisited
    • “I am right, you are wrong”
[“Looks like you have a different thinking…let us discuss and make an attempt to understand”]
    • “What you do doesn’t make sense; Let me do it in my own way and show you, eventually prove you are wrong”
[“My idea is not to provide it to you; Let us see if we can make the solution by working along with you”]
    • “I feel victimized, situations are against me”
[“I have a choice to respond for the situation; Let me see how can I influence others”]
    9
  • 18. Same Dialogues – Revisited
    • “I don’t care what is happening…let me stick to my own job”
[“I feel not part of the system; Let me try and introspect why I am feeling this way”]
    • “What is the point discussing these things? It always happens like that”
[“There should be a reason why this is done; If not I have the necessary responsibility to change it”]
    • “Let me take maximum benefit out of the situation”
[“Let me see where exactly the problem lies and work towards solution”]
  • 19. Complementary is a strength
In team having similar kind of people, will lead to failure
    Complementary skills are required to:
Bring in different perspective and choose the best
    Utilize every individual’s strength
Work together as a unit for delivering great results
Every individual has got a role to play in the team
Imaging if we try to (Examples from Indian Cricket):
Appoint Denis Lilly as a bowling coach for Tendulkar
Appoint Viv Richards as a batting coach for Harbajan
Give a lot of coaching to Munaf for becoming a wicket keeper
  • 20. Do you remember?
    The case where:
They didn’t had any star/international players
Nobody expected to win even in their wildest dreams
Most of them were from local teams, with reasonable track record
They came together for the first time
    What they did?
Understood each other’s strengths & weakness
    Got the basics right
Do the right thing, irrespective of designations
    Encourage & support each other
  • 21. Rajasthan Royals – Champions – IPL 2008
Personal effectiveness plays a key role in understanding each other & winning together as a team!
  • 22. Thank you, Kindly provide me with your feedback!
