A Federal Coalition Government will allocate $1.5 million to enable completion of the Insight specialist
primary school for blind and vision impaired students on the Berwick campus of Monash University.
While there are six schools for deaf and hearing-impaired students in Melbourne and a number of
specialist schools for students with other disabilities, there is no school in Melbourne specialising in the
education of blind and vision impaired students.
Victoria’s only school dedicated to the education of blind and vision impaired students was closed in
December 2009.
A group of dedicated parents have put forward a plan and started to build a specialist primary school to
serve as a centre of excellence for the education of blind and vision impaired students.
Insight has been operating from temporary premises since February 2013 and has started construction
of a permanent facility at Berwick.
The $1.5 million a Coalition Government would provide would allow completion of the new school,
which commenced with funding of $2.14 million from the Victorian Coalition Government.
