Parylene coating process
 Generic name for a unique polymer series based on p-Xylyene.
 The vapour deposition is carried out under vacuum at room temperature.
 The single coating builds up one molecule at a time, encapsulating any and all
exposed surfaces; resulting in a highly conformal coating.
9 | May 20, 2015 | © Curtiss-Wright
Properties of Parylene
 Lightweight and Ultra thin : Controlled as low as 0.05µm. Pin hole free at 0.6µm.
 No stressors: thermal or cut forces on the device. No ingredients to out gas or leech.
 Highly conformal coating: Suitable for substrates with very complex typography e.g.
Stents, Miniature PCBs
 Bio compatible, Bio Stable and Non- thrombogenic. ISO10993 & UPS Class VI tested.
 Green chemistry: chemically inert and non-toxic. RoHS and Reach compliant.
 Dry film lubricant: Low co-efficient of friction 0.25 static and dynamic. (N)
 Environment barrier: Protects against moisture, corrosive fluids, chemicals, gases,
temperature and fungus
 Particulate free
 High dielectric strength: Excellent at containing electrical energy. 7kVA at 25µm
 Adheres well to metal, rubber and plastics
 Optically clear

Medical Device Applications
 Dry film Medical coating – Medical device applications:
 Mandrels / Wires – catheter lumen, balloon welding, forming and tipping.
 Guide wires – braided and straight.
 Needles and Probes
 Medical Elastomers – removing tackiness of silicone and rubber components.
 Plastic and metal subassemblies in surgical tools and moving parts.
 Environmental protection - Medical device applications:
 Vascular and peripheral stents
 Gastric implants
 Surgical entry devices – trocars, speculums
 Pacemakers – leads and PCB’s
 Electrosurgical tools
 Cochlear and ocular devices
 Medical Elastomers – o’rings, gaskets and seals
 Needles and probes
 Medical electronics and diagnostics
11 | May 20, 2015 | © Curtiss-Wright
Elastomeric applications
 Coating typically 0.5µm - 2µm
 Thermally stable between -200°C and 140°C
 Resolves tackiness without adding weight or materially affecting elasticity.
 Seals micro porosity protecting against potential leachable ingredients.
 Final product benefits from a bio compatible, non-toxic and chemically inert environmentally protective
barrier.
 Typical elastomeric applications:
 Gaskets / O-rings /Seals – Environmental barrier and tackiness.
 Keypads: Silky finish, protecting printed legend.
 Stoppers and syringe plunger tips: low static co-efficient of friction
 3D Printed models
 Silicon and Rubber Tubing
 Catheter components
 Entry devices

Defence electronic application:
 Military ground vehicle electronics
 6 board controller assembly
 Existing conformal protective coating allowed ingress of gases present in the boxed unit,
causing damage to ceramic components resulting in board failures.
 Moisture protection also required as the units are not hermitically sealed.
 Solution:
 The chemical and moisture resistance of Parylene C at 12-15µm meets and exceeds the
needed protection.
16 | May 20, 2015 | © Curtiss-Wright
Additional benefits for Electronics coated with Parylene
 RoHS compliance and Lead-free solders:
 Tin Whiskers more prevalent.
 Parylene is an excellent whisker suppressant.
 In test found to be the best thin film conformal coating.
 First choice in high reliability electronics: Medical Device, Military and Aerospace.
 Curtiss-Wright Controls carried out testing on coatings to improve joint life of Lead-free
solder joints for military electronic applications.
 Parylene far surpassed the performance of any other
conformal coating tested.
 Joint life improving by an average of 2X under thermal
shock testing (-40/125C)
17 | May 20, 2015 | © Curtiss-Wright
Aerospace/Aviation applications:
 Electrical cable raceways
 Problem:
 Anodised aluminium exposed to aviation chemicals.
 Risk of electrical discharge from lightening strike.
 Current solution adds significant weight and cost.
 Solution:
 Parylene C at 20µm
 Voltage withstand of >5kVa
 Chemical resistance far surpassing other coatings tested
 Adds very little weight.
 Reduction in cost $2.50 vs $12 -20 per unit.
18 | May 20, 2015 | © Curtiss-Wright
Other application examples:
 Aviation – Copper nickel back plate. (Electrical Housing)
 Parylene C providing electrical barrier protection. 15-18µm
 Elastomeric Gasket/ O-rings
 Parylene C barrier to gases and reducing tackiness of the
substrate and maintain elasticity at 1µm.
 Under vehicle inspection – LEDs rated to IP67.
 Parylene C barrier at 18µm.
 Fasteners – Electrical barrier to lightening strike.
 Elastomeric parts - Keypads, Gaskets, O-rings – Environmental barrier and tackiness.
 Power supplies, Sensors – Environmental and Electrical barrier.
 Magnets, wire round and ferrite cores - Environmental and Electrical barrier.
