  • 1. 1 DEPARTMENT OF ONCOLOGY ACADEMIC UNIT OF CLINICAL ONCOLOGY NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in Medical Oncology (ST3) (Fixed Term) REF: The University of Sheffield, in partnership with South Yorkshire and South Humber Postgraduate Deanery and the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has developed an exciting pathway of academic clinical training opportunities (http://www.shef.ac.uk/medicine/prospectivepg/pcat). Applications are now invited for an Academic Clinical Fellowship in Medical Oncology at ST3 level. This new post has been created as part of the NIHR programme of Integrated Academic Training (http://www.nihrtcc.nhs.uk/) and offers candidates a comprehensive experience of clinical academic medicine working alongside internationally renowned clinicians and researchers. We are seeking highly motivated, enthusiastic individuals wishing to excel in both their clinical and academic training and who have the ambition to be the next generation of world-leading academic clinicians. The post is tenable for up to 3 years and attracts a NTN(a). During this period the Academic Clinical Fellow will commence specialist training in Medical Oncology. The Fellow will also spend 9 months in academic research training in The Academic Unit of Clinical Oncology during which they will prepare an application for an externally funded clinical research training fellowship to undertake a PhD. All Academic Clinical Fellows will be entitled to automatic enrolment on the Masters Programme in Clinical Research that is offered by the University of Sheffield. This is a programme that has been specially designed for ACF's and is aimed to provide students with in-depth understanding of the process and techniques for clinical research. It has been designed around the ACF posts and extends over a period of three years. Core modules cover all the important aspects of the research processes, study design, statistics and clinical trial methodology. There are optional modules covering specific areas of research methodology and a research placement and portfolio module which will be based around the ACF's individual research placements. Most of the taught modules are provided by the School of Health and Related Research, which has a strong record of providing taught Masters programmes in this area.

About the Medical School Sheffield School of Medicine was founded in 1828, subsequently merging with Firth College (1879), forerunner of the University, and Sheffield Technical School (1884) to form University College Sheffield in 1897. Equally important is the research we engage in to contribute to developing the medicine of tomorrow. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, we submitted to 6 Units of Assessment. Overall, 90% of our research was assessed as internationally recognised with 60% of research in UoAs 2 and 4 being rated world-leading or internationally excellent. We increased substantially the number of staff submitted and our research power ranks us 11th out of the 20 Russell Group Medical Schools. Department of Infection and Immunity The Department combines basic science research in molecular cell biology, with a particular focus on innate immunity, with clinical specialties including Respiratory Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Renal Medicine, Rheumatology and Dermatology. There is a very substantial base of Wellcome Trust, MRC and BHF grant funding. The department includes two MRC and one Wellcome Trust Senior Clinical Fellows and one Wellcome Intermediate Clinical Fellow. There are also a number of Clinical and Non- Clinical Research Fellows funded by MRC, Wellcome Trust, ARC and Kidney Research UK. There is extensive expertise in vertebrate and mammalian models of chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases. There is also a strong track record of high quality clinical and translational research. There are strategic links to the MRC Centre for Developmental and Biomedical Genetics and to the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology within the University of Sheffield. The Department of Human Metabolism The Department of Human Metabolism combines strong basic and clinical science groups to create a major focus on translational research. This is well illustrated by the integration of the NIHR funded Biomedical Research Unit for Bone within the Department. The research strengths are in the fields of Musculoskeletal Research, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Reproductive Medicine with cross-cutting themes in Clinical Pharmacology and Imaging. Research activity is supported by state of the art molecular biology laboratories, dedicated clinical research facilities and access to the latest imaging technology including MR, NMR and PET scanning. The department is home to the Sheffield Institute for Maternal, Fetal and Neonatal Imaging (SIMFANI). The main areas of musculoskeletal research are in osteoporosis, childhood bone disease, inflammatory arthritis and bone oncology and the Mellanby Centre for Bone Research is located within the department. Reproductive research is in fertility, andrology and the department hosts one of the most successful Assisted Conception Units in the country, with facilities for human embryonic stem cell derivation. The Diabetes Group has a focus on hypoglycaemia, neuropathy and diabetic education. The Endocrinology Group has expertise in pituitary and autoimmune thyroid disease with research programmes directed at optimising endocrine replacement therapy. The Clinical Pharmacology Unit has extensive expertise in pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modelling, human drug metabolism and pharmacogenetics. Research activity is supported through a broad portfolio of research funding. This includes project and programme grant support from major UK funding organizations such as the Medical Research Council, NIHR, the Arthritis Research Council, Diabetes UK and the Leukaemia Research Fund. Substantial support from biotechnology and
  • 5. 5 pharmaceutical companies has formed the basis for a significant knowledge transfer activity and the department supports four university spinout companies (Asterion, Diurnal, Medella, Health Care Solutions). A major emphasis of the department is in career development. This has been demonstrated by the success of members of the theme in attaining personal support through Fellowship schemes, which include NIHR, Arthritis Research Council Clinician Scientist and Clinical Research Fellowship awards. Department of Oncology The Department of Oncology at the University of Sheffield has an extensive research programme from basic science through to clinical trials. There are three main groupings in the department. The Institute for Cancer Studies (Head, Professor Mark Meuth) receives core funding from Yorkshire Cancer Research and the major focus of research relates to genomic instability and DNA repair mechanisms. The clinical trials unit at Weston Park Hospital (Head, Professor Robert Coleman) has major areas of research in the field of bone oncology, particularly the role of bisphosphonates in the prevention and management of patients with bone metastases. This work links closely with other principal investigators in the University with a strong research interest in bone oncology and bone health (Professor Peter Croucher and Professor Richard Eastell). The third major area of research is tumour microcirculation and micro environment (Professor Gill Tozer and Professor Nicola Brown) with a research interest in angiogenesis as a target for cancer treatment. This work links to other groups in the University undertaking related research (tumour targeting group, Professor Claire Lewis). Cancer research in the Department of Oncology receives extensive funding from Cancer Research UK, Yorkshire Cancer Research, NIHR, Leukaemia Research Fund and other national and local research organisations. In addition to these areas the Department includes the Academic Units of Urology, Supportive Care, Human Nutrition and Ophthalmology. All of these have strong areas of research activity both within their specific fields and integrating with the areas outlined above. Together with the Academic Unit of Medical Education and the other four departments that comprise the Medical School, the Department of Oncology makes a substantial contribution to teaching in the undergraduate medical curriculum. The department also hosts the Undergraduate degree course in Optometry and a Postgraduate Master’s course in Human Nutrition contributing to the Master’s course in Molecular Medicine. Department of Neuroscience The Neuroscience Department comprises multidisciplinary groups from Neurology, Neuropathology, Neuroimaging and Biological Psychiatry working in both basic and clinical neuroscience. The department ranks within the top 8 Neuroscience departments in the UK in terms of quality of outputs (UoA 9 RAE 2008). The major areas of research interest are in neurodegenerative diseases (diseases of the motor system, basal ganglia and dementia); neuropsychiatric disorders (psychosis and major affective disorders) and neuroimaging. The neurodegenerative disease group research portfolio includes genetic, cellular, molecular and clinical research into common disorders including motor neuron diseases, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease and the ageing brain and dementia. The research focus is strongly translational and a new 2,800m2 research facility, the Sheffield Institute of Translational Neuroscience (SITraN) is currently being developed and is expected to open in autumn 2010. The biological psychiatry group has major research programmes investigating auditory function; time perception and processing; social cognition and executive function in health and neuropsychiatric disease. The main interests of the neuroimaging group are investigation of the causes and sequelae of cerebrovascular disease; neurodegenerative processes and foetal and
  • 6. 6 childhood developmental brain abnormalities. There are strong collaborative links with other Neuroscience groups within the University of Sheffield, including: the MRC Centre for Developmental and Biomedical Genetics (CDBG) which has major strengths in developmental neuroscience and in model systems for neurodegenerative disease; the Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging groups in the Department of Psychology and with tissue engineering and nanotechnology groups within the Kroto Institute. Research activity within the Neuroscience department is supported through a broad portfolio of research funding. This includes project and programme grant support from major UK funding organizations such as the Wellcome Trust; Medical Research Council; NIHR; EU and multiple neurological and psychiatric disease related charities. Substantial funding from biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies supports our translational and clinical research programmes. The Neuroscience Department attaches great importance to career development. We have an excellent track record of attracting prestigious external fellowship awards and six of these fellows have recently progressed to faculty positions within the department. Department of Cardiovascular Science The Department of Cardiovascular Science has a strong base in vascular cell biology and inflammation-related discovery science. This is being translated through a number of experimental and preclinical models to studies in man. Specific research groupings within the Department engaged in this activity include cell biology, inflammatory signalling, vascular biology, haemostasis, non-mammalian models, platelets, medical physics, pulmonary vascular and coronary artery disease. The Department expertise in Vascular Biology and Haemostasis/Thrombosis research is internationally recognised and Pulmonary Vascular Disease is an emerging area through an MRC Career Development Award. The Medical Physics grouping have substantial EU funding for the computational modelling of flow in vascular systems. Significant research, equipment and capital project funding has been made to the Department by the MRC, BHF, Wellcome Trust and the NIHR (for a Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit CVBRU) http://www.shef.ac.uk/medicine/nihrbrus/cardiovascular- bru.html. The Department has strong links with TUOS Centre for Stem Cell Biology, TUOS MRC Centre for Developmental and Biomedical Genetics and with the Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust through the Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit (Director: Crossman) and the Clinical Research Facility (Director: Newman). Funding sources in the Department include NIHR, MRC, EU and BHF. Academic Unit of Medical Education The goal of the Academic Unit of Medical Education is to provide high level professional educational services to support and enhance the teaching role of the medical school. In doing so, it will undertake research and development activities which will establish a national and international reputation as a centre of excellence in the field of medical education. The Academic Unit provides high level professional educational services to support and enhance the teaching role of the medical school. Academic staff in the Unit undertake research and development activities, which seek to establish a national and international reputation as a centre of excellence in the field of medical education. The Unit has responsibility for:  Curriculum development, management and enhancement
  • 7. 7  Staff development  Research in medical education  Operating the clinical skills centre  Overseeing the Patients as Educators programme  The use of information technology for curriculum management and communication between staff and students, via Minerva, our managed learning environment  Collaborative and consultancy activities, locally, nationally and internationally Academic staff in the Unit have a range of research interests including, competency based assessment, professionalism, curriculum evaluation and interprofessional education. The curriculum of the MBChB course integrates clinical medicine and medical sciences throughout all years. Both academic staff and NHS clinicians teach and assess students. There are opportunities for students to undertake intercalated Bachelor of Medical Sciences courses and short research attachments lasting a few weeks as part of the MBChB curriculum. Academic Unit of Clinical Oncology The Academic Unit of Clinical Oncology comprises Professors Coleman and Woll, Dr Robinson (Reader), Dr Ingunn Holen (Non-Clinical Reader) and Dr Danson (Senior Clinical Lecturer). The Unit is supported by programme funding from Yorkshire Cancer Research and the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. We have been awarded programme funding by the Department of Health and Cancer Research UK as an Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre. The Academic Unit has excellent infrastructure for delivery of research training. For basic medical science, there are extensive facilities for molecular biology, tissue culture, genetics, microarray and proteomics and confocal imaging. Clinical Oncology has close links with the Institute for Cancer Studies (Director, Professor Mark Meuth) in the Medical School, and other research groups in the Department of Oncology, including Vascular targeting and angiogenesis – Professor Tozer, Professor Brown; Bone oncology – Professor Croucher, Dr Holen. Clinical research is based in the Cancer Clinical Trials Centre, adjacent to Weston Park Hospital, on the main Sheffield University and hospitals campus. It is a purpose built clinical research building, with unsurpassed facilities and over 40 specialist staff supporting a wide portfolio of cancer clinical trials throughout the Trust and North Trent Cancer Network. There are close links with the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) and European Organisation for Cancer Treatment and Research (EORTC). Weston Park Hospital functions as the non-surgical Cancer Centre for the 1.8 million population of the North Trent Cancer Network. There are 25 consultant oncologists and 16 SpRs, all of whom participate in the cancer clinical trials programme. Subspecialty interests of the consultants span all tumour types. There are active postgraduate training programmes in both Medical and Clinical Oncology.   • 8. 8  Dr Sarah Danson, Senior Clinical Lecturer in Medical Oncology  Dr Jim Lester, Clinical Lecturer  Dr Ingunn Holen, Non-Clinical Reader In addition, there are postdoctoral fellows, clinical research fellows, data managers, clinical trial coordinators, research nurses, research physicists, research radiographers, research pharmacists, graduate students and technicians, all funded through research grants. Unit performance The Academic Unit of Clinical Oncology has a strong record of research and publications. The unit has attracted grant funding from Yorkshire Cancer Research, the Department of Health, Cancer Research UK and industrial sources. Major interests include gestational trophoblastic tumours, bone oncology and breast cancer (Prof Coleman), lung cancer biology (Prof Woll) new drugs and melanoma (Dr Danson) and developmental radiotherapy (Dr Robinson). Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust was created through the merger of the Central Sheffield University Hospitals and the Northern General Hospital NHS Trusts on 1st April 2001. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust incorporating the Northern General Hospital, the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, the new Jessop Wing, Weston Park Hospital and Charles Clifford Dental Hospital is now the fourth largest NHS Trust in the country. It was granted Foundation Status in 2004. As a Trust, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation trust is responsible for the planning and delivery of the highest quality patient care, providing services for patients not only from Sheffield but all parts of the North Trent region and UK. The annual budget is over £690 million with nearly one million patients coming for treatment each year. Further details are included in the attached document. Weston Park Hospital Weston Park Hospital is the base for the Oncological Service for South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire. It is one of the major Radiotherapy Centres in the country and is sited in the main hospital campus area of the city, within a quarter of a mile from the University, the Children’s Hospital, Jessop Hospital for Women and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. There are approximately 3,500 inpatient admissions per year, 20,000 daycase chemotherapy attendances and over 6500 new patients registered annually. It is a self- contained hospital unit with 82 inpatient beds. Weston Park Hospital acts as an NSCAG supra-regional referral centre for the diagnosis and treatment of gestational trophoblastic disease and a national and European centre for the treatment of arterio-venous malformations with the stereotactic radiosurgery unit (in conjunction with the neurosurgical team). There is a newly built daycase chemotherapy suite and offers the opportunity to treat 28 patients at any one time. There are outpatient facilities, a radiotherapy department (see below), theatre facilities and pharmacy with a reconstitution service for cytotoxic chemotherapy. A Teenage Cancer Trust Unit for adolescents, jointly funded between the Teenage Cancer Trust and Weston Park Hospital Cancer Appeal, was completed in

There is an Academic Department of Clinical Oncology, with representatives in medical oncology, radiation oncology and, most recently, surgical oncology, the latter in association with the Department of Surgery at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. (i) Radiology There is a diagnostic imaging department with x-ray ultrasound apparatus and impression suite facilities are provided in close association with the simulator suite and the radiotherapy department. Diagnostic isotope, CT and MRI scanning is now available on site. In addition to radiotherapy there are facilities for surgery and an expanding programme of cytotoxic chemotherapy. The hospital also houses a large radiotherapy and physics department and provides an ocular oncology service in conjunction with the ophthalmic surgeons at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, who have achieved NSCAG status. (ii) Radiotherapy The radiotherapy equipment is housed in a large treatment hall and comprises:  Seven Varian Linear Accelerators, comprising:- Four linac 6 MV Accelerators – two with MLCs. Three dual energy (6 MV and 10 MV) Accelerators with electron facilities and MLCs.  One spare bunker.  One 250 kV Orthovoltage Machine.  One Pantak Superficial Set.  One Varian Simulator.  One Lexsell Stereotactic Radiosurgery Unit.  LDR Selectron for gynaecological use in a purpose built extension.  Two Virtual Simulator (spiral CT scanner with specific planning software). There are facilities for the use of unsealed isotopes in therapy and diagnosis. (iii) Pathological Services Haematology and histopathology services are currently provided from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. A service for chemical pathology, bacteriological and other specialised investigations is provided by the appropriate departments in nearby hospitals. Phlebotomists are employed at Weston Park Hospital for both inpatients and outpatients. (iv) Outpatient Services There are outpatient facilities within the hospital with 6 consulting suites and approximately 50% of our outpatient work is carried out at Weston Park Hospital. However, the remaining 50% are seen as outpatients in the local district general hospitals. There is an outpatient chemotherapy suite staffed by appropriately trained nurses. (v) Research and North Trent Cancer Service There are excellent opportunities for clinical research, co-ordinated by the Clinical Trials
  • 10. 10 Centre at Weston Park Hospital. The Clinical Trials Centre is a phase I National Cancer Research Network site. Support for health services research is provided by Sheffield University’s School for Health Related Research (ScHARR). The “North Trent Cancer Network”, which co-ordinates cancer services across all Trusts in North Trent covering a population of nearly 2 million, provides overall co-ordination of cancer developments, clinical cancer research and audit. There has been considerable emphasis on the need for joint consultation in the treatment of malignant disease and joint clinic sessions are held with Consultants in other specialities including haematology, surgery, endocrinology, dermatology, gynaecology, urology, paediatrics, ENT and maxillofacial surgery. Post Details JOB TITLE: NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in Oncology BRIEF OUTLINE: The clinical programme is designed to provide training from ST3 level for a period of 3 years. Further details of the Specialist Registrar rotation for South Yorkshire and South Humber are provided in the attached document. Objectives of the Training Programme: 1. To undertake specialist training in Medical Oncology. 2. To undertake a generic programme in research methodology. 3. To identify an area of academic and clinical interest upon which to base an application for an externally-funded PhD programme. Relationship between Academic and Clinical Training The post-holder will be part of the South Yorkshire and South Humber specialist registrar rotation in Medical Oncology. Academic training will be based in the Academic Unit of Clinical Oncology, situated at Weston Park Hospital, and in the Medical School laboratories, all of which are in the main Sheffield University and hospitals campus. The fellow will be assigned clinical and laboratory academic supervisors. During their academic attachment, the trainees will be assisted to prepare a competitive application for an externally funded training fellowship. In preparation for this, they will be helped to identify a topic of clinical and academic interest for research; undertake a review of the relevant literature, suitable for publication as a review article; undertake training in relevant research techniques; and obtain preliminary research data to strengthen the training fellowship application. Research Protected Time: Will be based on a block release system to allow dedicated protected time away from clinical duties for academic research. Successful candidates: The exit from this post will typically be to an externally-funded research fellowship, leading to award of a PhD and subsequently application either for a Clinical Lecturer post or a Clinician Scientist Fellowship. The Unit has an outstanding record of success in Fellowship applications. The Unit was also awarded a number of Clinical Lecturer

Unsuccessful candidates: If the post-holder does not achieve the expected clinical competencies, this will be handled in the same way as for all other trainees in speciality medicine.   • 14. 14 An introduction to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust manages the five adult hospitals in Sheffield (Northern General, Royal Hallamshire, Jessop Wing, Weston Park and Charles Clifford hospitals).   • 24. 24 South Yorkshire Programme The rotation is based at Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield and during the rotation experience is gained within peripheral units within North Trent (Doncaster, Chesterfield, Barnsley and Rotherham). There are five posts in total in the rotation at present, although this is subject to expansion. They provide a comprehensive four year training programme fulfilling all the requirements of the post- MMC curriculum in Medical Oncology. Each trainee will rotate through a variety of posts during their clinical training. General Medical Oncology is a feature of all posts but specialist experience will be available in each post to provide exposure to all aspects of cancer medicine together with radiotherapy, palliative care and haematology. Currently rotation occurs every six months. There may be in the future the chance to rotate with the rest of Yorkshire. Entry at StR is competitive, placing strong weight upon MRCP UK, or equivalent and evidence of good progress in clinical training, including experience in cancer-related specialties such as palliative medicine, haematology and clinical oncology. Weston Park Hospital is the base for the Oncological Service for South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire. It is one of the major Radiotherapy Centres in the country and is sited in the main hospital campus area of the city, within a quarter of a mile from the University, the Children’s Hospital, Jessop Hospital for Women and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. There are approximately 3,500 inpatient admissions per year, 20,000 daycase chemotherapy attendances and over 6500 new patients registered annually. It is a self- contained hospital unit with 82 inpatient beds. Weston Park Hospital acts as an NSCAG supra-regional referral centre for the diagnosis and treatment of gestational trophoblastic disease and a national and European centre for the treatment of arterio-venous malformations with the stereotactic radiosurgery unit (in conjunction with the neurosurgical team). There is a newly built daycase chemotherapy suite and offers the opportunity to treat 28 patients at any one time. There are outpatient facilities, a radiotherapy department (see below), theatre facilities and pharmacy with a reconstitution service for cytotoxic chemotherapy. A Teenage Cancer Trust Unit for adolescents, jointly funded between the Teenage Cancer Trust and Weston Park Hospital Cancer Appeal, was completed in 2002. There is an Academic Department of Clinical Oncology, with representatives in medical oncology, radiation oncology and, most recently, surgical oncology, the latter in association with the Department of Surgery at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Radiology There is a diagnostic imaging department with x-ray ultrasound apparatus and impression suite facilities are provided in close association with the simulator suite and the radiotherapy department. Diagnostic isotope, CT and MRI scanning is now available on site. In addition to radiotherapy there are facilities for surgery and an expanding programme of cytotoxic chemotherapy. The hospital also houses a large radiotherapy and physics department and provides an ocular oncology service in conjunction with the ophthalmic surgeons at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, who have achieved NSCAG status. Radiotherapy The radiotherapy equipment is housed in a large treatment hall and comprises:  Seven Varian Linear Accelerators, comprising:- - Four linac 6 MV Accelerators – two with MLCs. - Three dual energy (6 MV and 10 MV) Accelerators with electron facilities and MLCs.  One spare bunker.
  • 25. 25  One 250 kV Orthovoltage Machine.  One Pantak Superficial Set.  One Varian Simulator.  One Lexsell Stereotactic Radiosurgery Unit.  LDR Selectron for gynaecological use in a purpose built extension.  Two Virtual Simulator (spiral CT scanner with specific planning software). There are facilities for the use of unsealed isotopes in therapy and diagnosis. Pathological Services Haematology and histopathology services are currently provided from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. A service for chemical pathology, bacteriological and other specialised investigations is provided by the appropriate departments in nearby hospitals. Phlebotomists are employed at Weston Park Hospital for both inpatients and outpatients. Outpatient Services There are outpatient facilities within the hospital with 6 consulting suites and approximately 50% of our outpatient work is carried out at Weston Park Hospital. However, the remaining 50% are seen as outpatients in the local district general hospitals. There is an outpatient chemotherapy suite staffed by appropriately trained nurses. Research and North Trent Cancer Service There are excellent opportunities for clinical research, co-ordinated by the Clinical Trials Centre at Weston Park Hospital. The Clinical Trials Centre is a phase I National Cancer Research Network site. Support for health services research is provided by Sheffield University’s School for Health Related Research (ScHARR). The “North Trent Cancer Network”, which co-ordinates cancer services across all Trusts in North Trent covering a population of nearly 2 million, provides overall co-ordination of cancer developments, clinical cancer research and audit. There has been considerable emphasis on the need for joint consultation in the treatment of malignant disease and joint clinic sessions are held with Consultants in other specialities including haematology, surgery, endocrinology, dermatology, gynaecology, urology, paediatrics, ENT and maxillofacial surgery. Individual Educational Supervision is in place in each post, and in each on-the job assessments of clinical competence and mini-PAT are in place. Radiotherapy training, according to the medical oncology curriculum, is in place in each post and integrated with site-specific learning. Chemotherapy competency training and electronic assessment are in place for new starters to the scheme. Learning includes experimental training, independent self-directed learning and appropriate off-the-job education-master classes and day release and a weekly half-day taught course for first year trainees based in Leeds. Assessment at RITA/ARCP is annual, including joint academic RITA/ARCP. This is an expanding rotation, with expanding consultant numbers nationally and locally. Discussion is progressing of joint training developing with clinical oncology, including joint early StR training before specialisation. Training is complete in accordance with the new, PMETB approved, Curriculum. Trainees comfortably complete within three years of site-specific requirements of the curriculum, allowing time for sub-specialisation and preparation for post-CCT working. Trainee involvement on the Deanery STC is comprehensive. We will shortly move from an alliance with Trent and become part of a joint STC with Clinical Oncology and haematology input based in Yorkshire. Exit requirements will shortly include a written examination based upon knowledge of the published cancer care literature, and local

  • 27. 27 General Statement of Policy General Statement of Policy regarding fitness to practice proceedings by a licensing/regulatory body and relating to criminal records. Registration with a professional body, such as the General Medical Council or General Dental Council, imposes a duty on health care professionals to provide a good standard of medical care for, and behave appropriately towards, patients. NHS employers also have a duty to ensure that patients receive a good standard of medical care and to take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of patients and staff. In order to assess job related risks, the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery needs to establish if applicants who may be offered a placement on a Specialty training programme have a criminal record in the UK or in another country that they can lawfully be required to disclose. Applicants for Specialty training posts will also be asked if they are “bound over”, have received a police caution, warning or reprimand and whether they have been charged with a criminal offence that is not yet disposed of. Prior to making an appointment, the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery also needs to establish if applicants for Specialty training posts have ever been disqualified from the practice of a profession or required to practice it subject to specified limitations following fitness to practise proceedings by a regulatory body in the UK or in another country, and whether they are currently the subject of any investigation or proceedings by any body having regulatory functions in relation to health/social care professionals, including such a regulatory body in another country. Where such a position involves regular care, training, supervision or sole charge of persons aged under 18 or vulnerable adults (as defined by The Police Act 1997 (Enhanced Criminal Record Certificates)(Protection of Vulnerable Adults) Regulations 2000), applicants will also be asked whether they are currently the subject of any police investigation in the UK or any other country of which they are aware. Where the position is a “regulated position” under the terms of the Protection of Children Act 1999 (as amended by the Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000), checks will be carried out in accordance with the Protection of Children Act 1999. USE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Under the Computer Misuse Act 1990, any individual who knowingly attempts to gain unauthorised access to any programme or data held on a computer can be prosecuted. An individual who modifies any programme or data in a computer which they are unauthorised so to do, is also liable under the Act. If found guilty of these offences a person may be given a custodial sentence of up to six months or a fine or both. The person would also be subject to disciplinary action which may result is dismissal. Similarly, in accordance with copyright law, any person involved in the illegal reproduction of software or who makes, acquires or uses unauthorised copies of computer software, will be subject to disciplinary action, which may lead to dismissal. NOTIFICATION OF TERMINATION OF EMPLOYMENT The notice period will be in accordance with the nationally agreed Terms and Conditions of Service for this grade. STUDY AND TRAINING The region is committed to developing postgraduate training programmes for both general and higher professional training as laid down by Colleges and Faculties, and by the Postgraduate Dean’s network. At local level, college/specialty tutors work with unit Director of Postgraduate Education in supervising these programmes. Trainees will be expected to take part in these programmes (including audit) and to attend counselling sessions/ professional review. Study leave will form part of these education programmes and will be arranged in conjunction with the appropriate tutor.
