  3. 3. Towards the definition <ul><li>Medicalization is the process whereby previously non-medical aspects of life come to be seen in medical terms, usually as disorders or illnesses. </li></ul>
  4. 4. A range of phenomena has been medicalized <ul><li>Discuss in buzz groups the problem as it is presented </li></ul><ul><ul><li>in the society </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>in family practice and </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>professional attitude towards medicalization. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Report back two bullet points to the plenary. </li></ul>

A range of phenomena has been medicalized <ul><li>normal life events (birth, death), </li></ul><ul><li>biological processes (aging, menstruation), </li></ul><ul><li>common human problems (learning and sexual difficulties), and </li></ul><ul><li>forms of deviance: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>non-normative or morally condemned appearance (obesity, unattractiveness, shortness), </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>belief (mental disorder, racism), and </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>conduct (drinking, gambling, sexual practices) come under medical “jurisdiction”. </li></ul></ul>

Professional attitude <ul><li>Discuss in buzz groups: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>What is YOUR opinion? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>What is the opinion of your medical authority? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Is there a conflict between the two of them? </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Report back two bullet points to the plenary. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Professional attitude <ul><li>Shall we oppose societal, farm industry and patient pressure? </li></ul><ul><li>Do we still teach and believe in universal justice and equity? </li></ul><ul><li>Do we listen to the sound of $$? </li></ul><ul><li>Will future doctors listen to us? </li></ul>

Teaching potential on the subject <ul><li>In the focus: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Patient autonomy </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>High medicine expenditures </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Generic activity of doctors: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Prescribing </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>“ Do good ” </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Involving patients </li></ul></ul>
