  • 2. Facts
    • I chose St Matthew because I am named after him.
    • His feast day is on September 21 st .
    • He is the patron of bankers.
    • He was the son of Alpheus.
    • Matthew was a Jewish person. He was born in Palestine.
  • 3. Matthew meets Jesus
    • St Matthew lived around the time of Jesus.
    • Be fore his conversion Matthew was a tax collector. He was a honest man but he was in a profession that was notorious for attracting thieves.
    • He was sitting doing his job when Jesus, passing by, looked on him and said "follow me.“ He threw Jesus a big party and invited many tax collector friends.
    • Matthew was originally named Levi, Jesus changed his name to Matthew, which means in Hebrew 'the gift of Yahweh.'
  • 4. Matthew the disciple
    • He is one of the 12 disciples.
    • Mathew is the author of the first Gospel.
    • Matthew wrote the Gospel for the Jewish people. He wanted the Jewish people to know that Jesus is the Messiah.
    • After the ascension, he is believed to have preached the gospel in Africa, to the south of the Caspian sea, Persia, Macedonia and Syria.
    • He was martyred while preaching in Ethiopia at Naddaber
