  5. 5. Methodology The Global Investor 100 ranking of the world’s largest asset managers takes into account only third-party assets under management, where third-party assets are defined as assets managed on behalf of clients. Where asset management companies are owned by insurance companies, or are within the same group as an insurance company, group insurance assets have not been included. Where firms separate their asset management and private client, or private banking, activities, only the asset management activities have been included. Where more that one asset management company operates within a group, each company has been listed independently, with the group listed as the parent company. All information has been provided directly by the asset management companies concerned. Figures are for the end of June 2005, except where noted.

  9. 9. Notes 1. The drop in assets from 2004 to 2005 is due to the fact that the alternative assets have been separated out prior to the sale of Citigroup Asset Management to Legg Mason. 2. Several Mellon investment subsidiaries sub-advise several Dreyfus funds and following internal procedures have been reallocated under the name of the sub-adviser. Whilst this appears to result in assets declining at Dreyfus, that is not the case. Dreyfus has increased assets over the year and now has more than $175 billion in assets under management, including those sub-advised by other Mellon subsidiaries. It remains the investment advisor for all Dreyfus-branded funds Top ten increases in Position Position Name of Asset Management Company Rank 2005 Rank 2004 Difference in position 1 Nordea Asset Management & Life 42 57 15 2 Henderson Global Investors 63 77 14 3= Bridgewater Associates 61 73 12 3= Dodge & Cox 46 58 12 5= WestAM (WestLB Asset Management) 76 87 11 5= Wells Capital Management 45 56 11 5= Axa Investment Managers 40 51 11 8= Deka Investment GmbH 53 62 9 8= Russell Investment group 57 66 9 10= F&C Asset Management plc 31 40 9 10= Western Asset Management 32 41 9
