Fort Drum Tax Assistance Center offers FREE tax return preparation Staffed by IRS trained and certified Soldiers, the TAC will prepare and electronically file your federal and state income tax returns free of charge. By filing your return electronically, you can receive your refund in as little as one week. The TAC staff also is equipped to prepare 2010 returnsfor Soldiers returning from deployment who were not able to file last year.Located on South Post at the corner of Lewis and Conway / First Street West inBldg. T-120 (near the AAFES gas station and across the street from BehavioralHealth), the TAC will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.Beginning Monday, you may call 772-6727 to schedule a next business day appoint-ment. Throughout tax season, the appointment line will open at 1 p.m. each day andwill remain open until all appointments are filled for the next business day.The following documents are required to schedule an appointment: Military ID (Common Access Card) Social Security cards for you, your spouse and depend-ents and/or a Social Security number verification letter is-sued by the Social Security Administration. (Your military IDis not sufficient.) Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents listedon the tax return.Your Army W-2, which is available at www.mypay.dfas.mil.(Your leave and earnings statement is not sufficient.) A voided check to receive your refund by direct deposit.To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return,both spouses must be present or have a special power ofattorney or IRS Form 2848 authorizing you to sign the re-turn.Visit www.facebook.com/drumtax for the most up-to-dateinformation on the TAC.For more information, call the Fort Drum Tax AssistanceCenter at 772-3735.

Call for exemplary military childrenTo honor their sacrifices and to celebrate April as Month of the MilitaryChild, The Mountaineer staff is looking for four Fort Drum youths who showexceptional character at home, in school and in the community. Submissionswill be accepted through March 9 and should be limited to 200 words.Children will be selected based on the following criteria:* Scholastic activities and involvement* Family contribution (helping out at home, chores, etc.)* Community activities and involvement* Leadership skills* Volunteer service* Academic standing / achievement* Other activities, such as clubs, internships and summer workInclude any awards and honors the child has achieved.A nominee must be a student within grades 7-12 and reside with a militaryservice member assigned at Fort Drum.Selections will be made before April 1. The Mountaineer will highlight eachchild with a feature article and photos on the "Mountaineer People" page(B3). Families with more than one child may submit one entry per child or acombined entry.To submit a child for consideration, email the essay in a Word document todrum.pao@conus.army.mil <mailto:drum.pao@conus.army.mil> with thewords"Military Child Nominee" in the subject line. Include the childs name andage, and the military parents name, unit and telephone number.If a child is selected to be featured, The Mountaineer staff reserves theright to reprint any part of the essay in the article.Submissions received after the deadline will not be considered.

Spouses Club Fort Drum, New York Scholarship Application - 2012-2013 Academic YearThe Spouses Club Fort Drum is now accepting scholar-ship applications for the 2012-2013 academic year.Eligible individuals are: Spouses and children of active duty, reserve, or retired active duty military (officer or enlisted) Enrolled in a full or part-time accredited degree pro- gram during the upcoming 2012-2013 academic year (fall & spring terms). Applicants or their military sponsors must reside in the Fort Drum area or associated communities.
