ST. CLAIR COLLEGE 2005 KPI REPORT

  1. 1. KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS ST. CLAIR COLLEGE 2005 KPI Report
  2. 2. 2 St. Clair College 2005 KPI Report PURPOSE This report will present an overview of the KPI Survey Process, and a Summary of the 2005 KPI Results for St. Clair College. OVERVIEW OF THE KPI INITIATIVE Since 1997, a collaborative venture between the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and the twenty-five Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology has been utilizing the Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) to measure how well Ontario colleges are meeting the needs of students, graduates and employers. The KPI initiative is an attempt to ensure that college programs remain accountable, responsive, and effective in meeting the needs of its stakeholders. The five indicators used to measure college performance include the following:  Graduate Employment  Graduate Satisfaction  Employer Satisfaction  Student Satisfaction  Graduation Rate. Data from the first three KPI’s (Graduate Employment, Graduate Satisfaction, and Employer Satisfaction) are collected by external survey consultants, Forum Research and Compustat Consultants. These three KPI’s are used as the basis for determining performance- based funding by the province. The Graduate Employment/Graduate Satisfaction Surveys are conducted in March, July and November of each year. These telephone surveys are completed six months after graduation to determine graduates’ employment experience, and their satisfaction with their college education. Employer Satisfaction Surveys are then conducted with the employers of college graduates who have given permission for their employers to be interviewed. These telephone surveys are conducted in May, September, and January, and ask how the employer feels about the college’s preparation of graduates to meet employer’s needs. In November and February, Student Satisfaction Surveys are completed by colleges across the province. The survey results are then compiled by Compustat Consultants. The KPI survey information collected from graduates, employers, and current students is then used by colleges to demonstrate their achievements, and to improve their programs and services.
  3. 3. 3 ST. CLAIR COLLEGE 2005 KPI SURVEY METHODOLOGY St. Clair College’s KPI survey results for the Graduate Employment Rate, Graduate Satisfaction Rate and the Employer Satisfaction Rate were all for graduates of the year 2003/2004. The Student Satisfaction Rate was based upon the 2004/2005 academic year. The Graduate, Employer and Student Satisfaction Rates expressed below indicate the “KPI percentage of those surveyed that were very satisfied/satisfied”. The Graduate and Employer KPI Surveys were conducted as discussed in the previous section. St. Clair College’s 2005 Student Satisfaction Survey was conducted during the two-week period January 31 - February 11, 2005, as well as during an Advanced Survey period November 1-12, 2004. The Advanced Survey was given to those students who would be away from the College in February 2005 due to field placement, co-op, or clinical. The students surveyed were enrolled in their second semester and beyond, in Ministry-approved full-time postsecondary/post- diploma programs funded by the college general purpose operating grant. Surveys were completed by 4,130 St. Clair College students. The information was collected directly from each student following the guidelines of Ontario’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. ST. CLAIR COLLEGE 2005 KPI RESULTS The table below summarizes St. Clair College’s 2005 Key Performance Indicators, and compares them to the Provincial Ratings for 2005, as well as to St. Clair’s 2004 KPI Ratings. The Provincial Ratings represent an average of the KPI results for Ontario’s twenty-five Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology. The capstone questions are four questions on the Survey that ask students to rate their Overall Satisfaction within a particular area. The responses to these questions are then averaged to give the Overall Student Satisfaction KPI. St. Clair Students’ Overall Satisfaction represents the average percentage of students who completed the Survey and who responded that they were either “Satisfied” or “Very

The Provincial Average for Student Satisfaction represents the average percentage of students across the province who completed the Survey and who responded that they were either “Satisfied” or “Very Satisfied” to the capstone questions. 5. 5. 5 ST. CLAIR COLLEGE 2005 KPI REPORT KPI: STUDENT SATISFACTION RATE As noted earlier, the 2005 KPI Student Satisfaction Survey was completed by St. Clair College students in an Advanced Survey in November 2004 by field, co-op, and clinical placement students who were unable to complete the survey in February 2005. All other students who were enrolled full-time in post-secondary/post-diploma programs, and in their second semester and beyond, completed the Formal Student Satisfaction Surveys during the weeks of January 31 - February 11, 2005. A total of 4,130 students were surveyed at all campuses of St. Clair College. This total represents an additional 272 students surveyed, as compared to last year. This indicator of student satisfaction involves students evaluating four key areas:  the relevance and importance of knowledge and skills gained in specific programs;  the quality of learning experiences in specific programs;  the quality of facilities/resources in the College; and  the quality of services in the College. In the KPI Student Satisfaction Survey, four capstone questions were used to measure student satisfaction with these four key areas of the College. These four capstone questions were then averaged together to determine the College’s Overall Student Satisfaction Ratings. A comparison of these capstone questions from the 2005 KPI results for St. Clair College and the Province are shown below: 2005 Student Satisfaction Survey Capstone Questions: Overall, your program is giving you knowledge & skills that will be useful in your future career. – Capstone Question 14 Very Satisfied/ Neither Satisfied/ Very Dissatisfied/ Satisfied Nor Dissatisfied Dissatisfied St. Clair 80.7% 13.7% 5.6% Province 86.3% 9.3% 4.0% The overall quality of the learning experiences in this program. – Capstone 26 Very Satisfied/ Neither Satisfied/ Very Dissatisfied/ Satisfied Nor Dissatisfied Dissatisfied St. Clair 72.0% 20.0% 8.0% Province 80.1% 14.5% 5.4% The overall quality of the facilities/resources in the college. – Capstone 44 Very Satisfied/ Neither Satisfied/ Very Dissatisfied/ Satisfied Nor Dissatisfied Dissatisfied St. Clair 60.4% 28.3% 11.3% Province 70.0% 21.4% 8.6%
