  1. 1. BIRKBECK COLLEGE University of London Faculty of Continuing Education (FCE) Academic Year 2006/07 Course Code Award Code: FFMN100PXSP Subject Area Management FCE Course Title Strategic Change Type of Course Diploma in Management – Weekend Fast Track – Level M Institution Birkbeck Faculty of Continuing Education Class Venue Please refer to module timetable Meetings Saturday 9th December & Saturday 13th January Time 10 am – 5 pm Course Taught by Stephen Collins, DProf, MSc, MA, CertEd, FCIPD INTRODUCTION This course focuses on the processes of strategic management and the problems and importance of managing strategic change in organisations. Participants will be asked to undertake challenging activities to apply ideas and learning from texts to their personal experience. PREREQUISITES A first degree (or equivalent qualification) or three to five years’ relevant management experience. Students who have completed the Certificate in Management with at least four modules at Merit grade (60–69 per cent) can apply for entry to the Diploma. Students must have a good standard of written and spoken English. Non-native speakers of English should possess the equivalent of a 6.5 IELTS (Academic) and be aware that this course requires large amounts of reading as well as active participation in discussions. COURSE AIMS Lorna Evans Strategic Change Syllabus (Sept 2006)
  2. 2.  To introduce students to contemporary concepts, debates, and perspectives that are relevant to the study of strategic change.  To help students help themselves to learn and communicate more effectively with lecturers and colleagues with a view to enhancing their academic and managerial effectiveness.  To enable students to develop effective approaches to study through the acquisition of a range of oral, written, visual, analytical, and team working skills.  To apply strategic change management concepts to actual organisational change issues.  To develop one’s "change judgement"—the ability to understand what is critical about a certain change context and what is and is not possible as part of an implementation approach. OUTCOMES By the end of the course, students should be able to:  demonstrate knowledge and understanding of strategic change management information and ideas introduced through the course materials.  communicate more effectively and confidently in a management context.  collect and analyse information, independently and as part of a team, from a variety of sources and represent the findings in oral and written forms.  critically analyse, debate, and evaluate differing perspectives on topics relevant to strategic change.  identify the impact of factors such as race, class, gender, sexuality, disability, and age on their own and others’ experiences and perceptions of learning.  identify their own learning experiences, reflect on these, be aware of personal strengths and weaknesses, and develop strategies to further enhance their learning. TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS There will be instruction by the lecturer along with individual, group and pair work with an emphasis on task-based and collaborative learning. Students will develop their critical and analytical thinking skills to support their management studies and/or work. Discussion and debate will be encouraged, and homework will be used as preparation for classroom sessions and to reinforce learning. Major concepts from the core texts (Balogun & Hope Hailey, 2004; Senior & Fleming, 2005) will be highlighted in the two sessions. Lorna Evans Strategic Change Syllabus (Sept 2006)
  3. 3. COURSEWORK & ATTENDANCE The course includes task-based activities and exercises involving practical examples and illustrations that are designed to encourage intellectual curiosity, the development of problem solving skills, and active participation in Higher Education at the postgraduate level. Students are invited to interact with readings from the two core textbooks (to be read outside of class) and with each other in ways that permit them to develop their own personal attitude and approach to learning. Students must attend the two 10am-5pm Saturday sessions or else credit for the course cannot be granted. ASSESSMENT The Diploma is taught and assessed at postgraduate level and can be the first step to an MBA or other master’s degree in management. Students who successfully complete the Diploma may apply for admission to postgraduate degrees at Birkbeck.
