  • From Wolf to Woof: The story of the domestic dog *woof!* Done by: Lee Jun Hao (24) Jody Tjo Ying Shi (6) Kwoh Xue Yao (22)
  • Contents The origin of dogs Biological information of its ancestors Similarities and differences
  • The ancestors of the ancestors of the ancestors of the dogs ...or the origin of dogs
  • Epicyon Epicyon ("near dog") is a large extinct canid genus of the subfamily Borophagine ("bone-crushing dogs"), native to North America. It lived from the Hemingfordian of the Early Miocene to Hemphillian age of the Late Miocene (20.6—5.330 Mya). Epicyon existed for about 15.5 million years. Epicyon was one of the last of the Borophaginae and shared its North American habitat with other candidae Range of Epicyon based on fossil distribution
  • Eucyon The Eucyon is an extinct genus of small omnivorous fox-like canid endemic to North America during the Miocene living from 10.3 —5.3 Ma and existed for approximately 5 million years.
  • Grey Wolves The gray wolf (Canis lupus), often known simply as the wolf, is the largest wild member of the Canidae family. It is an ice age survivor originating during the Late Pleistocene around 300,000 years ago. DNA sequencing and genetic drift studies reaffirm that the gray wolf shares a common ancestry with the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris). Although certain aspects of this conclusion have been questioned, including recently, the main body of evidence confirms it. A number of other gray wolf subspecies have been identified, though the actual number of subspecies is still open to discussion. Gray wolves are typically apex predators in the ecosystems they occupy. Though not as adaptable as more generalist canid species, wolves have thrived in temperate forests, deserts, mountains, tundra, taiga, grasslands, and even urban areas. Though once abundant over much of Eurasia and North America, the gray wolf inhabits a very small portion of its former range because of widespread destruction of its territory, human encroachment, and the resulting human-wolf encounters that sparked broad extirpation. Even so, the gray wolf is regarded as being of least concern for extinction according to
  • The Eucyon species (bottom) migrated into the Old World, eventually evolving into wolves (top). About 800,000 years ago wolves crossed to Arctic North America. The dog's lineage began 37 million years ago in North America in predators that had distinctive pairs of shearing teeth and ran down prey. Early canids reached Europe seven million
  • Similarities between Wolves and Dogs Their method of locomotion, called digitigrade. Which means their movement is a way of life often depending on swift, silent motion. Like domestic dogs and all other canids, wolves have 42 teeth, although the wolves 4 canine teeth are much longer, often measuring 2.5 inches from root to tip. Wolves and dogs also share keen senses of smell and hearing, they are also forced to pant to keep cool.
  • Differences between wolves and dogs Wolves move their legs differently while running , the highly structured social system in which the wolves live,is nothing like a dog . Wolves only breed once a year, while domestic dog can breed up to 2 times in a single year. Wolves cannot live alone, as a dog can.
