    1. Parliamentary Debate A Primer
      • Parliamentary Debate consists of two teams made of two/three people each. The teams debate two different sides of a topic.
    2. Why do debate?
      • In debate, you learn how to present, organize, and refute arguments, which essentially is a great life skill.
    3. Resolution
      • A Resolution is a claim of fact, policy or value that is debated by the teams.
    4. This house should ban the death penalty This house should support stem cell research. The US Federal Government should grant citizenship to Illegal Immigrants currently residing in the US.
    5. The debate teams
      • Opposition
      Government Prime Minister Member of Government Leader of Opposition Member of Opposition Rebuttals
    6. Speaking times
      • PM: Max 2 minutes
      • LO: Max 3 minutes
      • MG: Max 3 minutes
      • MO: Max 3 minutes
      • LOR: 1 minute
      • PMR: 2 minutes
    7. The effective Prime Minister
      • Recognize the audience
      • State the resolution
      • Define resolution/criteria
      • Roadmap/preview arguments for the resolution
      • Plan to change resolution
      • Advantages of resolution
    8. The Effective leader of opposition
      • Recognize audience
      • Agree/Disagree with PM’s terms
      • Disadvantages to resolution
      • REFUTE ARGUMENTS FOR RESOLUTIONS
      • REFUTE ADVANTAGES
    9. The Member of Government
      • Recognize Audience
      • If there are any issues with the frame/resolution of the debate, take care of them.
      • If the LO dropped (Missed an argument) in their speech, be sure to bring that up.
      • Reinforce your arguments (By refuting the Opp’s refutations)
      • Refute the LO’s new arguments
    10. The Member of Opposition
      • Recognize Audience
      • If there are any issues with the frame/resolution of the debate the MG , take care of them.
      • If the LO dropped (Missed an argument) in their speech, be sure to bring that up.
      • Reinforce your arguments (By refuting the Opp’s refutations)

      • Summarize Debate
      • Point out particulars on why you win

    13. What I am looking for
      • Good communication
      • Good organization
      • Good quality arguments
      • Good refutation
      • Courtesy to your teammate, your opponents, your audience, and to me.
    14. Grading sheet
      • You will be ranked from Unprepared to Superior in several areas
      • These are for you to compare yourself to the rest of the class with, and are not a significant part of your grade.
      • Comments will be written on your sheets based on the previously mentioned areas I’m looking for. These are the primary basis for your grade.
