Slide 1: Cyclone one Bravo Bangladesh May 1997

Slide 2: Fact file Cyclone one Bravo formed over the Bay of  Bengal in the Indian Ocean in May 1997. It struck land at Chittagong on the South-  Eastern coast of Bangladesh. It was a sever tropical cyclone with winds  up to 250kph recorded.

Slide 3: The Effects The effects of Cyclone One Bravo were disastrous:  111 people died,  7,000 people were injured,  500,000 people were left homeless,  1 million people had no fresh water due to the wells being contaminated by water, as a result there were many cases of Diarrhea.  Very few people had insurance, so they were left with literally nothing.

Slide 4: What was done to lessen the impacts Recovery took several years because they are an LEDC. But because the country was used to the effects of cyclones, they were able to act quicker. • National Aid: The Prime minister established a relief fund in 1997. Food was given to 500 of the poorest families over 2 months, materials were also given to those who lost their homes. • Ariel Flights to assess damage. • Relief trucks: On the 20th May, 2 relief trucks supplied first Aid & emergency supplies. • Protection Schemes: The Earth embankments were often not built strong or high enough, so new embankments and cyclone shelters were built. • Education programmes: Education programmes were implemented so that the locals new what to do in the future.

Slide 5: • International Aid - $1 billion: Bangladesh’s government asked for International Aid. Contributions were given from: Australia, Canada, France, Sweden, UK ($160,000), USA ($640,000) European commission approved humanitarianism Aid for the cyclone victims.
