Transcript of "Super Bowl"

  1. 1. Life’s Super Bowl
  2. 2. Life’s Super Bowl  Life has often been compared to sports.  Edwin Arlington Robinson: “Life is the game that must be played.”  Scripture. ▪ “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it” (1 Cor 9:24, ESV). ▪ “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race” (2 Tim 4:7, ESV). ▪ “Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Heb 12:1, ESV).
  3. 3. The Purpose of Both
  4. 4. Life’s Super Bowl  Football: To carry the ball from one end of the field to the other.  Life: To move from one day to the next in good spiritual condition.
  5. 5. Life’s Super Bowl  It‟s quite possible to fumble in life.  Saul did. ▪ The Lord had made him king. ▪ Years later, the Lord commanded him to annihilate the Amalekites. ▪ Saul kept alive the king of the Amalekites & refused to devote the best things to destruction. ▪ Samuel: “Rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected you from being king” (1 Sam 15:23, ESV).
  6. 6. Life’s Super Bowl  It‟s quite possible to fumble in life.  Saul did.  Solomon did. “When Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father” (1 Ki 11:4).
  7. 7. Life’s Super Bowl  But, it‟s possible to keep going from one yard line to the next.  Samuel: “Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him” (1 Sam 3:19, ESV).  John the Baptist: “The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel” (Lk 1:80, ESV).
  8. 8. Life’s Super Bowl  In order to keep moving forward, you can‟t quit.  In football, you have to keep moving the ball forward.  In life, we must keep moving forward. ▪ “My beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (1 Cor 15:58, ESV). ▪ Walt Disney: “There s really no secret about our approach. We keep moving forward.”
  9. 9. Life’s Super Bowl  In football, you strive to score more points than your opponent.  In life, you strive to win the crown of life.  “There is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing” (2 Tim 4:8, ESV).  “Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Rev 2:10, ESV).
  10. 10. Shall that crown of life be yours?
  11. 11. In both, obstacles stand in the way of success. The Prevention of Both
  12. 12. Life’s Super Bowl  In football, the opposing team stands in the way of success.  In life, our obstacle is Satan.  “Satan” means “Adversary.”  His mission is to oppose God‟s people. ▪ “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Pt 5:8, ESV). ▪ “The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world” (Rev 12:9, ESV).
  13. 13. Life’s Super Bowl  In football, the opposing team stands in the way of success.  In life, our obstacle is Satan.  “Satan” means “Adversary.”  His mission is to oppose God‟s people.  It is he who tempts to sin. ▪ “When I could bear it no longer, I sent to learn about your faith, for fear that somehow the tempter had tempted you and our labor would be in vain” (1 Thess 3:5, ESV). ▪ “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil” (Eph 6:11, ESV).
  14. 14. Are you standing against Satan?
  15. 15. Injuries plague football & life. The Pain of Both
  16. 16. Life’s Super Bowl  Football players must often retire at a relatively early age.  In life, individuals often struggle with health concerns.  Struggles often come with old age. ▪ Eccl 12:1-7. ▪ Yet, poor health doesn‟t always wait until old age. ▪ Lazarus (Jn 11). ▪ Jairus: “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live” (Mk 5:23).
  17. 17. Life’s Super Bowl  The spiritual self is not bound by the limitations of illness.  “We do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal” (2 Cor 4:16-18, ESV).  Our spiritual health is far more important than our physical health!
  18. 18. How is your spiritual health?
  19. 19. In football & life, rules must be followed. The Precepts of Both
  20. 20. Life’s Super Bowl  Football has rules both teams must follow.  Life has rules to follow.  The laws of the government (Rom 13:1-5).  The laws of God: “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil” (Eccl 12:13-14, ESV).
  21. 21. Life’s Super Bowl  Football has rules both teams must follow.  Life has rules to follow.  The laws of the government (Rom 13:1-5).  The laws of God: (Eccl 12:13-14).  The laws of employers: “Obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, not by the way of eye-service, as people- pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man” (Eph 6:5-7, ESV).
  22. 22.
