The ALA (American Library Association) promotes thefreedomto choose or the freedom to express ones opinionseven if that opinion might be considered unorthodox orunpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring theavailability of those viewpoints to all who wish to read them.Whats the difference between a challenge and a banning?A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, basedupon the objections of a person or group. A banning is theremoval of those materials. Challenges do not simply involve aperson expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attemptto remove material from the curriculum or library, therebyrestricting the access of others.
