1. Parking, traffic challenges expected for ‘full honors’ ceremony
Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, the 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will retire
after 41 years of service at a “full honors” ceremony Friday, Sept. 25 at 2:30 p.m. on
Summerall Field, Fort Myer. Most parking lots on the base will be closed to all except
ceremony attendees. Following is a list of parking lot closures and activities that will
close or close early Friday, Sept. 25:
- The Summerall Field (bordering Sheridan Avenue) and Regimental Parking lots
(bordering Jackson Avenue across from the Post Office and O Club): these will be closed
at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23 and remain closed until after the ceremony at about 5
p.m.
- The Caisson parking lot will be closed at 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24 and closed until
after the ceremony at about 5 p.m.
- The Tri-Services parking lot (between Arlington National Cemetery wall and McNair
Road) between Old Post Chapel boundary and up to the Bowling Center will be closed
at 9 p.m. Sept. 24, and only one way traffic will drive into this lot in the entrance across
from Brucker Hall (Building 400).
- Funerals will be conducted, and the Old Post Chapel parking lot will be open only for
funeral attendees Sept. 25.
- Spates Community Club parking – The first two rows in front of Spates will be
reserved for scheduled MWR events; beyond this and up to Memorial Chapel parking
lot, parking will be allowed on a first come, first served basis.
- Overflow parking after the Tri-Services lot is filled will be in the Fort Myer Fitness
Center on Sheridan Avenue.
Curtailed operations
These activities will be closed Sept. 25 or have abbreviated hours:
ACS will close at noon
Administrative Services – 8 a.m. to noon
Auto Craft Center – closed Sept. 25
Commissary – Open Sept. 25
ID card facility – 8 to 11 a.m.; will stop taking customers at 11 a.m.
Marine and Family Programs – closed Sept. 25
Military Personnel Division – 8 to 11 a.m. – will stop taking customers at 11 a.m.
In/Out Processing – 8 a.m. to noon
Post Office – Fort Myer - open 8 a.m. to noon
Official Mail Distribution Center – Fort Myer – open 8 a.m. to noon
Soldier for Life – 8 a.m. to noon
Army Substance Abuse Program – 8 a.m. to noon
Army Continuing Education System (ACES) – 8 a.m. to noon
Visitor Control Center (Emergency Services – 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. (no AIE
registration)
The Officers’ Club (Building 214) – shuttle stop will not be operational.
Customers will embark/disembark the shuttle at the Dining Facility (Building
404). This will extend the wait time five minutes at the Building 404 stop to
match the normal departure time of the Building 214 stop.
Dining Facility (Building 404) operations will not be impacted by the ceremony,
however, customers may experience challenges in parking in the adjoining lots.
