  • We want to challenge you – and your fellow floor mates– to take charge of the energy you consume in your personal and collective workspace. “I’ve Got the Power” is a “floor vs. floor” competition to see which floor can demonstrate the greatest energy reduction at the end of 2011. The floor with the largest percent reduction of energy usage by the end of 2011, compared to 2010 usage patterns, will win a Grand Prize of their choice worth up to $5,000. In addition, each month the winning floor will receive a catered bagel breakfast. The goal is to reduce energy usage at our 575 Fifth Avenue headquarters building by 20%, beginning August 1 st through December 31, 2011, over usage during the same timeframe in 2010.
  • Energy Fast Facts: U.S. contribution of global greenhouse gas emissions is about 20% U.S. population relative to the world is 5% More than 5 million commercial and industrial buildings in the U.S. Energy use in commercial and industrial buildings is responsible for about 45% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming The energy used by a building to support just one office worker for a day causes more than twice as many greenhouse gas emissions as that worker’s drive to and from work Annual energy cost for U.S. commercial and industrial buildings is $202.3 billion As much as 30% of energy in buildings is used inefficiently or wasted Amount of money that would be saved if the energy efficiency of commercial and industrial buildings improved by 10% is $20 billion (our goal is 20%) Amount of greenhouse gas emissions that would be reduced if the energy efficiency of commercial and industrial buildings improved by 10% is equal to about 30 million vehicles (number of registered vehicles in Illinois, New York, Ohio and Texas combined) Amount of greenhouse gas emissions increased by 70% between 1970 and 2004.
  • As an Energy Champ, you will rally your floor mates to participate in “I’ve Got the Power,” encourage conservation behaviors, report progress and invoke a spirit of competition and pride. You will be expected to… Serve as your floor’s “I’ve Got the Power” point person Provide your floor with tips and ideas on how to save energy Motivate floor mates to adopt and sustain conservation behaviors Promote and share your floor’s successes with floor mates and management Be the “face of the floor” and possibly featured in company communications
  • Facilitate the “I’ve Got the Power” chair drop before launch on August 1 st Host energy conservation floor activities such as: “ Lunch & Learn” - invite vendors and speakers to discuss energy conservation “ No Print Day” - encourage floor mates to refrain from using copy machines for an entire day “ Save Power Hour” – at the top of the hour, have everyone on the floor shut down appliances, lights, computers for 15-30 minutes Perform evening “Mystery Sweeps” to call out floor mates’ behavior that “needs improvement” and recognize exemplary behavior Make sure kitchenette appliances, display cases and televisions are turned off/unplugged at the end of the day and make sure blinds are closed before the weekends Write an article for Planet L’Or é al and/or Sustainable Intelligence newsletter Celebrate successes!
  • We’ve created an “I’ve Got the Power” Facebook private page: Encourage your floor mates to “friend” us We have created an unique group on the “I’ve Got the Power” Facebook page for Energy Champs. Here you can engage with other floor Energy Champs. Share best practices, stories and challenges with other Energy Champs on your group Post photos and updates on floor activities and events. You can also upload videos if you’re so inspired. Energy IQ Test provided by the EPA or create your own. Give out a prize for the highest score. Most importantly, be creative and have fun!!
  • Chair drop materials include: challenge fact/tip sheet, power down monitor cling/light switch sticker
