The endoscope is a metal tube that has asmall light source and camera at one end andan eyepiece at the other. Endoscopes may be made from a rigidtube or, more often, from a flexible tube thatallows the surgeon to freely move and adjustit as it enters the area that is being observed.

The laparoscopy segment was valued at $6.8 billion in 2011, and isexpected to climb to $10.6billion in 2016, yielding a CAGR of 9.2%.Urology endoscopy was valued at $4.1 billion in 2011 and in 2016 shouldbe worth nearly $4.9 billion, a CAGR of 3.5%.GI endoscopy was worth $3.7 billion for 2011, and will be worth $4.9billion in 2016, a CAGR of 5.7%.Arthroscopy totalled $3.2 billion in 2011 and should reach $5 billion in2016, a 9.1% CAGR.The ear, nose and throat segment, worth $2.4 billion in 2011, should beworth $3.2 billion in 2016, a CAGR of 5.7%.The Gynaecology endoscopy segment was valued at nearly $1.3 billion in2011, and is expected to rise to nearly $1.5 billion in 2016, yielding a CAGRof 3.4%.The neurology segment was valued at nearly $1.4 billion in 2011 and in2016 should be worth nearly $1.7 billion, a CAGR of 3.7%.The segment comprised of other endoscopies was worth nearly $1.8billion in 2011, and will be worth $1.9 billion in 2016, a CAGR of 1.4%.
