Intesys Workshop: Le soluzioni VMware e perché realizzare un "private cloud"?

WORKSHOP: INNOVATIVE ENTERPRISE IT SOLUTIONS

  • Gartner Objectives as stated on Last CallGo through products he is considering for the research - he has already downloaded vCD 1.5.Extend the assessment to vCenter Operations. (vCemter Operations Management Suite is planned for GA with version 5 is Q1 2012 )Compare vCD (which he says lacks quite a few modules) with several VMware competitor performance management and capacity management modules in their CMPs - like BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management; CA Automation Suite for Clouds; HP Cloud Service Automation; IBM Tivoli Service Automation Manager; Microsoft System Center (2012, including Operation Manager, Configuration Manager, Virtual Machine Manager, Service Manager, Orchestrator) The problem he says is that he needs to assess a specific SKU VMware offers, and he has been told that “VMware Cloud Infrastructure” is not yet a SKU. The US corporate team told him on the back of this that "on the SKU, the Cloud Infrastructure Suite is still not a separate SKU but you can still buy all of the components today (via multiple SKUs) – so not having a separate CI SKU doesn't hinder customers from still getting access our Cloud Infrastructure Suite.
  • Key Points:Every phase of technology disruption has introduced fundamentally new paradigms for managementCloud will expand the management market opportunity for VMware and our ecosystem Each new management paradigm solves challenges related to the preceding eraTransition: Dynamic virtualized and cloud environments present new management challenges and opportunities that require new levels of automation and control
  • Each of these areas or vectors will need to be managed effectively in the highly dynamic environment of virtualization and cloud. This will require high levels of automation, much of which must be built into the systems and platforms at each layer. This slide highlights the key principles behind VMware’s approach to managing infrastructure, applications and end user computing in the context of IT as a Service.VMware Infrastructure and Operations Management solutions enable IT to create a zero-touch, compliant infrastructure that’s the right foundation for private cloud. Native management is designed-in to the virtualized and public, private, and hybrid cloud infrastructure to help deliver self-service through policy-driven control.VMware Application Management solutions enable IT to build modern apps through our open, standards-based Platform as a Service. They also help to quickly, accurately, and confidently transition existing applications to virtualized and cloud infrastructures, map application and infrastructure dependencies, and assure application portability and performance. VMware End-User Computing Management allows IT teams to ensure the quality of the end user experience, provision and deploy desktops rapidly, manage workstation images simply, and optimize costs through dynamic resource right-sizing.In each of these vectors, VMware can help you with your specific IT initiatives. For example, at the infrastructure layer we can assist with the building out of your private cloud, automating your operational environment and ensuring security and compliance. We will walk through these specific initiatives in more detail later in the presentation. While these capabilities can help with your management challenges at each layer, there is an even bigger challenge that VMware can help you address.
  • Simplifying here also means ease of submitting a request: the portal is always available and automated workflows allow the fulfillment/approval cycle to begin immediately upon submission.
  • vCloud Director is Vmware’s technology for providing IaaS. These are the abstractions for the consumer and provider that enable IT to be delivered and consumed in a service-like manner.

  • Lets take a moment first to discuss the role of Operations Management in running cloud scale environments. There are 2 major tasks to ensure the cloud is operating well. One is to Ensure and Restore Service Levels and the other is to Optimize for Efficiency and Cost.Ensure and Restore Service Levels is all about problem solving and troubleshooting. This generally starts with an Alert if you have the right system in place or if you don’t, likely from the application team facing a performance problem. The job of the cloud admin is to Detect the problem in the cloud infrastructure (such as a slow performance in VM), Isolate the issue ( which could even be a config problem with a patch applied at the OS layer) and then Remediate the issue (by performing actions such as Rolling back the patch)The other is Proactive Maintenance to avoid the problem from happening. This task involves Analyzing (such as looking at Utilization), Forecasting (future needs) and Optimizing (such as reclaiming capacity). That’s where vCenter Operations comes in to provide Monitoring and Management to run cloud operations. In the next few slides, we’ll take a look how vCenter Operations helps cloud administrators in both these tasks.
  • Note to Presenter: It is preferred that you do a demo (offline of VM based) instead of using these slides. However, if a demo is not possible you can leverage these slides to tell the vC Ops Std story. This is the Details Screen - Workload is in focus here so many of the widgets shown are focused on Workload The purpose of this screen is to Troubleshoot the problem. What is causing the Workload to run high? What metrics are key indicators of the issue? Graphs and charts showing usage and demand Is this object affecting its Peers? Children? The Workload widget quickly shows which of the 4 resources are causing the workload issue. Here we see that we are using 71% of the Network I/O available to us. That’s what updates the Workload Badge to 71. You can also see some of the other resources are also working hard. The Key Metrics tab at the top will show you the metrics that we are tracking that are above normal. This can help you troubleshoot the problem and help you determine a possible course of action.
  • There are also out of the box reports and views that help you to Optimize capacity, by getting an insight into waste such as Idle VMs.
  • The shear volume of Event, Performance, Availability metrics that need to be captured and analyzed is incredible. Every Host, every VM, every user, every admin action is generating data that can be analyzed…but existing management tools just aren’t designed to take advantage and drive insight from this data. They just weren’t designed with Cloud, or even simply virtualization in mind. We see a need for tools using increasingly sophisticated statistical models to separate between noise and the critical insights necessary to meet your SLAs. Extensible Collection FrameworkCollect data from existing physical systems, new virtualized cloud systems, viewable through a single pane of glassOptimize For Virtualization and CloudArchitect for continual change and fluidityShine light on invisible wallsDeep knowledge of new metrics and layer of abstractionLeverage Advanced AnalyticsStatic thresholds useful in targeted casesAnalytics provides a general framework for monitoring and troubleshootingAutomated, no tuning necessary
