Why Kleiwerks International?

We use dirt to build communities.

Kleiwerks International, a 501c3, is a global network of innovative development experts who promote ecological and social resilience by training local leaders, conducting hands on projects, and advocating for place based natural building to create connection between individuals, community and place.

Since 1998, Kleiwerks International has led over 220 educational events and 40 demonstration projects for 8,000+ participants from 34 countries in Southeast Asia, South America, the United States, and Haiti.

Kleiwerks International leadership trainings ensure that the best practices in natural building and appropriate technologies reach the people who need them most. Graduates have created permaculture education centers, orphanages, schools and whole villages.

Santi Asok, a Thai Buddhist organization, hosted a Kleiwerks International training, then went on to incorporate the technologies they learned into their movement's self-reliance curriculum. This directly reaches 150,000 farmers per year at 18 different centers throughout the country.

The Assembly of the Poor in Thailand sent three representatives to a 10-day Kleiwerks International natural building training. These three then helped to facilitate the building of the first earthen village in the country, which became a vehicle to train and inspire tens of thousands of other dispossessed villagers to organize their own planning and housing programs.

Why the Haiti Co-Laboratory?

Kleiwerks International was asked by the head of UN- Habitat to work with the Haitian government, local specialists, communities, and other NGOS to help create reconstruction policies and strategies that support a resilient future for Haiti.

The opportunity. The immediate need is $30k to continue the current assessment in two regions of Haiti. Total project need is $170k to address the entire country's reconstruction strategy, affecting millions of people.

Kleiwerks International has a team of seven people working on this project, three of whom are in Haiti (two Haitian), as well as an international network of experts on sustainable building and appropriate technology. The team works closely with the United Nations and others to assess which building methods survived the earthquake and how to best build for the future. This assessment will guide the national redevelopment plan to promote, enable and support sustainable building.
