We use dirt to build communities.

We are a global network of innovative development experts who promote ecological and social resilience by training local leaders, conducting hands on projects, and advocating for place based natural building to create connection between self, community and place.

Kleiwerks International’s leadership programs ensure that the best practices in natural building and appropriate technologies reach the people who need it most. Graduates have created permaculture education centers, orphanages, schools and whole villages.

Before we talk about what we’re doing in Haiti here is some information about what we’ve done.

Since 1998, Kleiwerks International, a 501c3, has led over 220 educational events and 40 demonstration projects for 8,000+ participants from 34 countries in Southeast Asia, South America, the United States, and Haiti.

In 2002, The Assembly of the Poor sent three representatives to a 10-day Kleiwerks International natural building training. The following year, they facilitated the building of the first earthen village in the country, which became a vehicle to train and inspire tens of thousands of other dispossessed villagers to organize their own planning and housing programs.

In 2003, Santi Asok hosted a Kleiwerks International training, then went on to incorporate the appropriate technologies they had learned into their movement's self-reliance curriculum, which directly reaches 150,000 farmers per year at 18 different centers throughout the country.

How does this apply to Haiti, and what is Kleiwerks International doing about it? The Haiti Co-Laboratory

$11.5 billion is pledged by the international community for the next three years of Haiti's redevelopment

Over the next few months, the Haitian government will create policies that determine what types of building materials, technologies and projects will receive the billions in funding.

What if the funds supported: • sustainable building • appropriate technologies • village led businesses • integrated reforestation projects ... that are: • replicable • scalable • environmentally-sound • seismically-safe • affordable for the majority of people in Haiti?

We can influence how these funds will flow.

Will billions of dollars go to foreign businesses to purchase industrialized materials that are polluting to the environment, unaffordable for the majority, culturally inappropriate and unsustainable in the long-run? Haitian $11.5 billion reconstruction policy

Or will those billions bring sustainable building and appropriate technologies to the hands of the people, including bamboo, compressed earth blocks, wattle and daub, and other indigenous vernaculars? Haitian $11.5 billion reconstruction policy

By using sustainable building technologies that align with local values, Haitian families will not only feel safer, but these economically viable and accessible solutions will help restore greater self-reliance and dignity for the majority of Haitian children, women and men.

This is where Kleiwerks International and YOU come in.

Kleiwerks International was asked by the head of UN- Habitat to work with the Haitian government, local specialists, communities, and other NGOS to help create reconstruction policies and strategies that support a resilient future for Haiti.

However, we need help! Our immediate need is $30k to address the housing policy in two regions of Haiti. Total project need is $170k to address the entire country's reconstruction strategy, affecting millions of people.
