  • Many aspects to adoption – right tools, information, governance. Part of it is about good user engagement. Social aspects new in 2010, designed to get users connected and sharing information. Staff create profiles, connect, and share updates Not about what had for lunch, about sharing knowledge and breaking silos Works well in separate officesNice features – skills management, activity stream, interactive org chart.
  • 2010 adds easy ways to provide content feedback and engage ueser. Ratings, notes and tags can all be added easily. Increases quality of content as feedback sent to authors.

  • Completely re-written blogs and wikis.In-line with expected blog and wiki behavior from products like Wordpress and pbwiki.

  • Workflow key in governance and controlSPD workflows greatly enhanced – support nesting and a lot more actions without development.Visio services allows workflows to be visualised through the web.
  • Gain control through Records Management Re-built in 2010. Doesn’t require separate record center. In-Place records management, legal holds, creation of complex policies.
  • Govern and control metadata. New taxonomy support allows hierarchical metadata. New keyword support allows control and also suggestion. New centralized metadata – share across different sites and server environments.
  • Custom built solutions deployed by the business without involving IT. IT cantrol sandboxes – CPU, RAM, Disk Space etc. Model used for SharePoint online services coming later this year.
  • New problem problem monitoring for IT staff. Help with identification and resolution. Much improved over reviewing log files.
  • InfoPath 2010 greatly enhanced to support richer business processes without code. Create validation and formatting rules quickly. Embed forms anywhere in SharePoint. Customize the default SharePoint forms for lists. Use InfoPath to manage data in other systems.
  • For more complex processes – bring in data from other systems. External data now treated like a list – updateable. InfoPath and Office can interact with data. Search can provide access to the information.
  • Can now publish Access Databases to SharePoint! Forms, reports, macros, queries all run out of SharePoint. If running part of a business in Access, make web based for easy management.
  • You can now integrate a business analyst when designing workflow. Model process in visio, Import to SharePoint designer Publish to SharePoint Visualise in SharePoint
  • Perform actions on multiple documents at once.
  • Use metadata to filter documents in a library.Fill in metadata in Office.
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint all work in the browser.Works across multiple browsers.Quickly preview and edit documents.
  • Document sets are new.Keep related documents together.Track metadata and versions together.Have a home page for the set describing what its about.Auto create predefined documents for new sets.

  • The next level of search is something called Search Drive Applications. These address specific business needs such as having a 360 degree view of a customer by brining together information from a number of sources, or providing research portals for things like competitive intelligence. The end user searches on a term (like a customer name) and gets back everything relevant to that customer in one view. This approach can potentially be cheaper than developing data warehouses.
